Choice of Theme: Urban Environmental Sustainability with Technological Innovation

Delhi is grappling with a severe air pollution crisis that threatens the health, livelihood, and quality of life for millions of its
residents. Urban Environmental Sustainability is our chosen theme, with a focus on developing innovative, technological
interventions that improve air quality in dense urban settings.
Given the scale of Delhi’s air pollution, which contributes to over 12,000 deaths per year, reduced life expectancy, and
increased respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, our project aims to provide a smart, scalable solution to this complex
problem. By integrating air purification with a sprinkler system to reduce suspended particulate matter, we address
both health and environmental needs while aligning with Delhi’s smart city vision.

Current State of Affairs: Addressing Air Pollution with Technology

Delhi’s air quality ranks among the worst globally, leading to significant adverse health effects, including permanent lung
damage in children, increased cases of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), asthma, and heightened
risks of cardiovascular diseases. Despite the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) and the National Clean Air
Programme (NCAP), air pollution levels continue to exceed safe limits, particularly during winter months when crop
burning and vehicular emissions exacerbate the problem.

Our project proposes to build on existing interventions by leveraging solar energy, AI, and IoT-based technology for
real-time air purification and pollutant monitoring. These systems will continuously analyze air quality data and control the
smart street pole’s functions to maintain optimal air purification while also conserving energy and water use in the
sprinkler system. This ensures maximum impact with minimal manual intervention, making it ideal for large-scale urban
deployment.
Solution: Tech-Driven Smart Pole for Pollution Control
Our solution integrates advanced technology to combat air pollution effectively:
Advanced Air Purification: Filters 3000 m³ of air/hour with pre-filters, HEPA filters, and CO2 absorbers, targeting
PM2.5 and PM10 pollutants. Low-maintenance design with 2-month filter lifespan.
AI Algorithms: Optimize air purification and sprinkler functions
based on real-time air quality, weather, and traffic data. The
system adapts to weather conditions, provides monthly air
filtration reports, monitors data for efficient operation, and sends
automated maintenance alerts.
Smart IoT Sensors: Monitors real-time air quality (CO2, NOx,
PM2.5) and activates the system only when needed, ensuring
energy efficiency.
Water-Efficient Sprinkler System: Minimizes dust resuspension
and particulate matter with controlled water usage during peak
pollution hours.
Solar Panels: Fully solar-powered to ensure sustainability, reduce dependency on grid power, and lower carbon
emissions.

Impact: Reduces PM2.5 levels within a 30-50-meter radius while maintaining sustainability and scalability for deployment
across urban regions.
AI optimization minimizes water use, enhances filtration efficiency, and extends the life of the filters. The system
requires minimal human intervention.

Feasibility: Practical and Impactful Solution for Delhi

Technological Feasibility: Integrates solar energy, IoT sensors, and air
filtration, tested in various settings, scalable for traffic pole installation.
Cost-effective and reliable.
AI-Driven Efficiency: Real-time adjustments based on pollution levels,
reducing operating costs while ensuring optimal air purification during
peak pollution.
Sustainability: Solar-powered to reduce carbon emissions, aligning with
Delhi’s sustainability goals.

Scalability: Leverages existing traffic poles for large-scale, low-cost

deployment, making it adaptable across other cities.
Socio-Political Alignment: Addresses public concerns over pollution and
health impacts, while aligning with Smart City and Digital India initiatives.

Key Risks and Mitigation Strategies

Maintenance Complexity: Risk of system failure due to lack of timely maintenance.
Mitigation: Automated alerts for filter replacement and diagnostics.

High Initial Costs: Potential high upfront costs for solar and IoT sensors.
Mitigation: Partnering with government and sponsors for funding, offset by long-term energy savings.
Public Acceptance: Initial skepticism about effectiveness.
Mitigation: Pilot programs with air quality improvement data to build trust.
Technological Malfunction: Potential failures in extreme weather.
Mitigation: Weather-resistant hardware and regular maintenance.
Scalability Across Diverse Urban Areas: Differing pollution patterns in various regions.
Mitigation: AI adaptability for tailored, location-specific adjustments.
