SECTION A: OPCVL
According to the IB, this analyse is defined as: “Break down in order to bring out the essential
elements or structure.” Therefore, you need to identify the essential elements of the source
in order to answer the question. The most basic elements of a source are its origin, purpose,
content, value and limitations. Since this question has 4 marks, you need to identify only
four ideas related to the value and limitation of the source. One good way to do this is by
completing the following chart:
Value Limitations
Origin
Purpose
Content
Select only four elements of the chart, and do no forget to present both values and limitations
of your sources. Additionally, you need to take into account the question that is presented
to know what kind of information to identify in the sources. Let’s take a look at the following
example:
First of all, you need to identify who is going to use the source and what is the purpose. In
this case, the question specified that the source is going to be used by a historian that wants
to study the Three Power on September 1940; thus the limitations and values must be
focused on that specific element of the question, for a historian that wants to study the Three
Power, specifically on the events of September 1940. Keep in mind that this part of the
question is not always the same.

demands and implications of the question. Responses are well structured
and effectively organized.
13-15
Knowledge of the world history topic is accurate and relevant. Events are
placed in their historical context, and there is a clear understanding of
historical concepts.
The examples that the student chooses to discuss are appropriate and
relevant, and are used effectively to support the analysis/evaluation. The
response makes effective links and/or comparisons (as appropriate to the
question).
The response contains clear and coherent critical analysis. There is
evaluation of different perspectives, and this evaluation is integrated
effectively into the answer. All, or nearly all, of the main points are
substantiated, and the response argues to a consistent conclusion.
