WHY IS JOSE RIZAL CONSIDERED AS A HERO

Dr. José Rizal is considered a national hero of the Philippines because of his unwavering dedication to the
country’s freedom and his significant role in awakening Filipino nationalism. Through his writings,
especially Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, Rizal exposed the injustices, corruption, and abuse
committed by the Spanish colonial government and the friars. His sharp observations and powerful words
inspired many Filipinos to question the oppressive system and work toward reform and eventual
independence. He used peaceful means—education, reason, and truth—to fight for the dignity and rights
of the Filipino people.

Rizal’s heroism goes beyond his literary works. He showed courage by openly criticizing the Spanish
authorities at a time when doing so meant risking one’s life. Despite being exiled and eventually executed,
Rizal remained firm in his beliefs. He refused to support violent revolution but instead encouraged moral
and intellectual reform. His death on December 30, 1896, made him a martyr and sparked even greater
resistance among Filipinos, uniting them in the fight for freedom. His willingness to die for the country
