1.1 INTRODUCTION:
Automation plays a crucial role in modern industrial systems, especially where
repetitive tasks are involved. Conveyor belts are essential in material handling and
production lines. However, continuous motion is not always ideal, particularly when
objects require time for inspection, processing, or placement.
The Geneva mechanism provides a simple and effective way to convert continuous
rotary motion into intermittent motion. This project uses the Geneva drive to create a
conveyor system that moves in a stepwise fashion, stopping for a fixed period during
each step. This allows for operations such as sorting, inspection, or robotic interaction
to occur between movements.
1.2 OBJECTIVES:
➢ To design and fabricate a conveyor belt system driven by a Geneva mechanism.
➢ To study the working of the Geneva mechanism in an industrial setting.
➢ To automate intermittent motion for material handling applications.
➢ To optimize space and reduce human labor in material transportation.
1.3 SCOPE:
➢ The system can be scaled for various industrial applications.
➢ It can be used in packaging, assembly lines, and automated sorting systems.
➢ Educational tool for demonstrating the Geneva mechanism's principle.
CHAPTER – 2: IMPLEMENTATION
2.1 SAMPLE INPUT/OUTPUT:
Input: Continuous rotation of the motor shaft.
Output: Stepwise rotation of the conveyor belt at regular intervals.
2.2 PROBLEM SOLUTION:
1. Design the Geneva mechanism with appropriate slots for the desired indexing.
2. Attach the conveyor belt to the Geneva wheel's output shaft.
3. Use a DC motor for continuous rotation input.
4. Implement a frame to support the motor, Geneva wheel, and conveyor belt.
5. Calibrate to ensure smooth indexing and avoid slippage.
CHAPTER – 3: DESIGN
3.1 ALGORITHM:
1. Start motor – continuous rotation.
2. Drive wheel rotates continuously.
3. Drive pin enters slot of Geneva wheel.
4. Geneva wheel rotates one step.
5. Conveyor belt moves accordingly.
6. Repeat steps 3-5 for each cycle.
CHAPTER – 4: DEPLOYMENT
APPLICATION:
➢ Industrial automation
➢ Packaging industries
➢ Assembly line indexing
➢ Educational demonstrations
