HU MANAGEMENT
What is a Handling Unit (HU) in SAP EWM?
A Handling Unit (HU) is a combination of products and their packaging, like a box, carton, or pallet that contains
goods. It is treated as one single unit in the warehouse for moving, tracking, storing, and shipping.
Think of it like this:
🟫 Pallet 🟫🟫🟫 Products Handling Unit
EUR Pallet + 100 Shampoo Bottles = HU with Label + Contents
Each HU has:
• Unique ID / Barcode
• Information about what’s inside
• The packaging type (pallet, box, crate)
• Where it is in the warehouse
Where are HUs used in SAP EWM?
Warehouse Activity How HU Helps
Goods Receipt (GR) Received items are packed into HUs
Putaway Move the whole HU to a storage bin
Picking & Packing Pick full HUs or unpack and repack items
Goods Issue (GI) Ship entire HUs to the customer
HU = Products + Packaging

Why are HUs important?

1. Main Packaging Material: Carton, pallet, drum, etc.
