General notes
The calculation determines the four key points on the load‐moment strength interaction diagram.
To determine the first point of the diagram, the condition of pure bending, the calculation uses an iterative process. The depth
to the neutral axis, kud, is entered as a finite value and varied until the value Nu is zero (this is equivalent to C=T).<Error:
invalid expression>
The 'balanced condition' is where the ultimate strength in combined bending and compression is reached when the stress in
the outermost layer of the tensile reinforcement has just reached yield stress.
The ‘decompression point' is where the strain in the extreme compression fibre is equal to 0.003 and the strain in the extreme
tensile fibre is equal to zero.
The design rules utilized are based on considerations of equilibrium and strain compatibility (plane sections remain plane after
bending) to determine the load and moment strength.
Assumptions and limitations
Square or rectangular doubly symmetric cross‐sections.
A simple rectangular stress block of α2f'c is used for the concrete at strength limit state subject to the limitations of section
10.6 of AS 3600‐2009, and the steel is assumed to be linear elastic‐plastic in nature with a constant yield stress.
This calculation does not cover the calculation of design action effects resulting from the application of dead and live loads,
construction loads, foundation movements, temperature changes and gradients, and creep and shrinkage.
