The Mothers of the Plaza the Mayo (“Las Madres de Plaza de Mayo” in Spanish) is a group of women who
started meeting in the main square of Buenos Aires, capital city of Argentina, to claim for their “disappeared”
children. Their first meeting took place in April 1977.
At that time, there was a military dictatorship ruling the country. It was forbidden for more than two people to
be together, so The Mothers marched around a pyramid in the square. They identified among themselves
wearing white scarves on their heads with their children's names embroidered.
Their claim became visible to the world in 1978, when Argentina hosted the FIFA Football World Cup. Foreign
reporters interviewed them. The Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo have walked every Thursday since that first
meeting.

founders and president of the civil association. Her grandson, Ignacio Guido Montoya Carlotto, was the 114 th
grandchild recovered in 2015 after 36 years of search.
