Week 11 Tutorial 10: Nonparametric Methods


1. A study is carried out to assess the effectiveness of two analgesic drugs (drug A and drug B) in
providing relief (hours of relief) in 12 patients suffering from arthritis. Drug B has performed better
in 9 patients (di > 0) and drug A has performed better in 3 patients (di < 0) . Is there any evidence
that one drug provides longer relief than the other.

2. In the past the number of defective pills (where defective is defined as pills that do not match some
quality control criteria) produced by a machine per lot of 1 000 has a median of 8. To test whether the
machine is still producing the same amount of defectives, the machine’s output is tested by randomly
selecting 30 “lots” of 1 000 pills. The number of defectives in each lot, in order of production, are 3,
11, 6, 22, 9, 12, 11, 12, 7, 12, 8, 14, 10, 7, 6, 8, 16, 10, 9, 10, 13, 8, 4, 10, 12, 9, 13, 11, 9 and 10.
Test that the median has increased relative to the prior median value of 8 per 1 000.
Conduct this test using (an appropriate) sign test.

4. The clients at a mental health clinic are periodically classified as “condition improved”, “condition
worsened” or “no change in condition”. A check of 15 patients reveals that 10 are classified as
“condition improved”, 3 as “condition worsened” and two as “no change in condition”. Do these data
provide evidence that the median condition is improving, i.e. that the median condition is greater than
0?
