William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 20

Punctuation in Graphology Apostrophe – 6 apostrophes are used on the


sonnet 20 to highlight the idea of possession
Ex: woman’s face, nature’s own, men’s eyes
symbolizes the artistic emphasis of
possessions on the sonnet.
Commas -7 - The number of comma is being
used by Shakespeare on the sonnet 20
conveys that the author has a chain of
connected ideas where he uses comma as a
short pause that indicates he had ideas that are
connected with each other.
Semicolon- 4 – The semicolons works as
bridges to connect flow of ideas that the
author wanted to be perceived by his readers.
It is a sign of linking continues thoughts or
two clauses that belong together.
Paragraphing in Graphology
Spacing and Indentation- The sonnet lacks on
indents and spacing which is common on
Shakespearean sonnets that are formulated in
lines or verses
Paragraph Length - The sonnet consists 10
lines which is not long, suggesting that the
work by Shakespeare will not trigger the
readers to get bored and digest the content

Types of Paragraphs Although it is quatrain and line form, I have
provided some informations from the sonnet

lines, The author used vivid imagery to
describe a woman’s face. This suggest the
creative way of the author on how he describe
things artistically.
Compare and Contrast Paragraph-“A
woman’s gentle heart, but not acquainted”
this quote, the author emphasizes two
contrasting ideas. This suggest that the
author wants the reader to have an
emphasis with the thought he wants to
convey with the readers.

Phonology in Stylistics
Phonological Devices
Euphony- The consonant and vowel sounds on
this part brings gentle harmony on the sound of

-“An eye more bright than theirs, less false in
rolling”

The e, y, s, f, a, and l gives gentle and smooth


sounds.
Cacophony - the sonnet does not contain harsh
words or tone.

Perfect Rhyme-
“painted” / “acquainted” This is considered s
perfect rhyme for it’s structure that the vowel
and consonant from the last part of the words
occurs and sounds the same

Slant Rhyme- it contains slant rhyme.


- “gazeth” and “amazeth” even they don’t have
the same count of syllables they are somehow
sounds the same from the sound of “eth”
As well as ““created” / “defeated” which is a
literal perfect rhyme.
