Objective:

To explore the social, historical, political, and literary background of major literary periods in English literature

and present your understanding through a creative PowerPoint presentation.

Literary Ages to Choose From:

1. Greco-Roman Classical Age (1200 BCE - 476 CE)

2. Old English / Anglo-Saxon Period (450 - 1066)

3. Middle English Period (1066 - 1500)

4. The Renaissance / Elizabethan Age (1500 - 1603)

5. Jacobean Age (1603 - 1625)

6. Puritan / Commonwealth Period (1625 - 1660)

7. Restoration Age (1660 - 1700)

8. Augustan / Neoclassical Age (1700 - 1798)

9. Romantic Age (1798 - 1837)

10. Victorian Age (1837 - 1901)

11. Modernist Period (1901 - 1945)

12. Postmodern Period (1945 - 1990s)

13. Postcolonial Literature (20th Century Onward)

14. Contemporary Literature (21st Century)

What You Need to Do:

1. Work in Groups:

- Your class will be divided into groups of 5 students each.

- Each group will be assigned one literary period to work on.

2. Prepare a PowerPoint Presentation (8-12 slides):

Your presentation must include the following:

- Years of the literary period assigned to you.

- Historical and Political Context (major events, rulers, wars, revolutions)

- Social and Economic Background (daily life, religion, education, trade, etc.)

- Literary Characteristics (themes, language, style, philosophy)

- Major Genres and Trends (e.g. drama, epic poetry, satire)

- Key Writers and Famous Works (at least 2-3 authors and their best-known works)

- Impact of the Previous Age on Your Assigned Age

- Overall Legacy and Impact (how the period influenced later literature or society)

- Visuals (images, timelines, maps, quote cards, etc.)

- Sources (last slide: mention websites/books used for research)

3. Presentation Guidelines:

- Everyone (or you individually) must speak clearly and confidently.

- Total time: 10-12 minutes

- Try not to read from the slides. Use cue cards or notes if needed.

4. No Written Submissions Required:

- Your PPT and spoken presentation are your final product.

Important Dates:

- Submission of PPT (on email/pen drive): First day after vacation

- Presentations Begin: Within first week of reopening

Assessment Criteria:

Tips:

- Don't overcrowd slides with text - use keywords.
