Department of IoT & Intelligent Systems
Assignment: Case Study-Based Analysis on Low Power Wireless & IoT Design
Course: IoT Design (IS3102)
Total Marks: 5 (Students who have not completed the Coursera course must attempt both
questions. You will be awarded 5 extra marks)
Submission Deadline: 15/04/2025
Objective:
The purpose of this assignment is to analyze real-world IoT applications in the domains of
Agriculture, Healthcare, and Activity Monitoring using low-power wireless and wide-area
network technologies. You will also explore IoT design using Raspberry Pi and Arduino to
implement practical solutions.
Instructions:
1. Read the given case study carefully.
2. Answer all questions with technical justifications and real-world IoT implementation
approaches.
3. Submit a detailed report with diagrams, references, and Python/Arduino code
snippets (if applicable).
4. Plagiarism will not be tolerated; ensure your answers are original.
Case Study:
Scenario:
A startup is developing an IoT-based smart monitoring system for different industries using low-
power wireless technologies and IoT devices. The company is exploring solutions in:
1. Smart Agriculture: Real-time monitoring of soil moisture, temperature, and humidity for
precision farming.
2. Healthcare: Remote patient monitoring for elderly care using wearable IoT devices.
3. Activity Monitoring: Smart fitness tracking using real-time motion and environmental
sensors.
The company wants to choose the most suitable wireless communication technology and IoT
hardware (Raspberry Pi/Arduino) to optimize power efficiency, range, and data transmission.
Assignment Questions:
Part A: Low Power Wireless and Wide-Area Technologies (5 Marks)
1. Compare BLE, IEEE 802.15.4e, Wi-Fi, NB-IoT, CAT-LTE-M1, and LoRa in terms of:
• Power consumption
• Range
• Data rate
• Suitability for IoT applications in agriculture, healthcare, and activity monitoring
2. Based on the above comparison, suggest the most suitable technology for:
• Smart Agriculture (Soil Moisture & Climate Monitoring)
• Healthcare (Wearable Patient Monitoring)
• Activity Monitoring (Fitness Tracking)
Justify your selection with real-world case examples.
3. Discuss how NB-IoT and LoRa differ in terms of scalability and network deployment for
large-scale IoT applications.
Or
Part B: IoT Design Using Raspberry Pi and Arduino (5 Marks)
4. Propose an IoT-based system design using Raspberry Pi and Arduino for one of the
three case study domains (Agriculture, Healthcare, or Activity Monitoring). Your answer
must include:
o Hardware components required (sensors, actuators, microcontrollers, etc.)
o Communication protocol used
o Workflow of data transmission & cloud integration
5. Write a pseudo-code or sample Python/Arduino script for data acquisition and
transmission from IoT sensors to a cloud dashboard.
6. Discuss the challenges and future improvements in IoT-based solutions for Agriculture,
Healthcare, and Activity Monitoring.
Submission Format:
• Cover Page: Assignment title, student name, roll number, and submission date.
• Report: Typed document (PDF/DOC) with structured sections for each question.
• Code: Attach a separate .py or .ino file if coding is implemented.
• Diagrams: Block diagrams for system architecture are encouraged.
Evaluation Criteria:
1. Technical Accuracy (1 Marks) – Clarity and correctness of concepts.
2. Justification & Real-World Relevance (1 Marks) – Practical applications and examples.
3. Code Implementation (2 Marks) – Functionality and correctness of scripts.
4. Presentation & Structure (1 Marks) – Clear formatting, diagrams, and references.
