Unlike most Australians, who avoid the dangerous creatures that surround them, Steve Irwin was a man who loved the great
outdoors. He grew up at a small wildlife park which was opened by his parents when Steve was just eight. A couple of years
before, he had received an unusual birthday present of a four-metre python. Soon he was was catching crocodiles for the
park, which he would sometimes do by leaping into the water with them. It was almost like he was destined for a life in
wildlife, something which came in useful when he worked for the Queensland government as a crocodile trapper, removing
animals from populated areas. On occasions spending months alone in the desolate outback, Irwin excelled in the role and it
was often he who would trap the largest and most dangerous specimens.
In 1991, when his parents retired, he took over their business – now known as Australia Zoo – and developed it into a major
tourist attraction. In a documentary, Irwin said, ‘I’ve got animals so genetically inside me that there’s no way I could actually
be anything else.’ Thousands of visitors visited Australia Zoo to watch Irwin interact with the dangerous animals on show.
Getting up close and personal to the animals was not just about the public. Like most naturalists, Irwin preferred animals to
remain in their natural habitat. However, that was not always easy for animals like the larger crocodiles who were perceived
to present a public danger. To his mind, it was better to keep them in captivity than have them shot by hunters. However, life
in a zoo can become predictable for these creatures, so Irwin would introduce moments of ‘good’ stress into their lives by
placing himself in danger. The animals would usually respond well to these moments of excitement and be more content as
a result. However, in 2004 he went too far, cradling his baby son, Bob, in one arm while feeding a large crocodile with the
other. While Irwin apologised at the time, he later insisted that the boy had been in no danger.
Essentially, Irwin’s lifelong aim was to get people excited about animals. His argument was that if you can achieve that feat,
it becomes a lot easier to protect both wildlife and the habitats that they need to survive. It was this objective that contributed
indirectly to his tragic death. Filming a documentary on the ocean’s deadliest animals, he was diving when a stingray shot
poison into his heart. According to a witness, Irwin swam too close to it and this is likely to be the reason why he was
attacked. Stingrays use their long tails to deliver poison to their victim only when they feel threatened. The crew of his boat
called the emergency services and tried to save him as they rushed to a nearby island to meet a rescue helicopter, but
unfortunately he died at about noon local time at the age of just 44. He was believed to be only the third person ever killed
by a stingray in Australian waters.
