LITERATURE-1

Class 12 - English Core

Section A
1. The bright sunshiny day, birds chirping at the edge of the woods, the sight of the exercising Prussian soldiers all these seemed to
Franz to be more tempting than the rules for participles. He could gladly spend life out of doors. However, he had the strength to
resist the temptation. Finally, he hurried off to school.
2. The line "Will they make them sing in German, even the pigeons?" from "The Last Lesson" indicates the profound impact of
cultural oppression and the loss of identity during times of war and occupation.
3. The young ragpickers support their parents by picking garbage. These people migrated to India from Bangladesh and settled in
Seemapuri. It is a place where about 10,000 rag pickers live. They live without identity and have no basic amenities, yet they are
happy here because they get food for their family by selling garbage. It is a slum where they could find many things and rag
picking is their only means of survival.
4. The title 'Lost Spring' conveys how millions of children in India lose the best season that is 'spring' of their lives which is
childhood because of poverty. Their life is lost because of hardships in which they are involved to earn their livelihood.
5. When Douglas was thrown into the pool, his old aversion to water grew stronger. Despite making several attempts to jump up, he
could not get out of the water. Instead, he got panicked, suffocated, dizzy, terrorized and paralysed during his attempts.
6. He took the help of a swimming instructor to learn swimming. The instructor taught him swimming piece by piece and then
Douglas went to different lakes to swim and found that tiny vestiges of fear still gripped him. Finally, he swam up and down the
Warm Lake and conquered his fear completely. He realised that in death there is peace and there is terror only in fear of death.
Will to live is stronger than fear of death. His determination to conquer his fear is what turned him into a good swimmer.
7. The poet’s childhood fear was of losing her mother either because of her death or separation from her after marriage. It appears
that the poet was single child of her parents and her father had passed away during her childhood. She compared it with ache
because she felt the pangs of emotions while leaving her mother alone at a very crucial age when she needed affection and
attention from her loved ones.
8. The parting words of the poet are expressive of the dilemma and confusion in her mind while her long smile is superficial and
expresses her helplessness. Her words "see you soon,Amma" and her smile not only hide her concern about her mother's frail
health but also show a faint hope that the old woman would survive long enough for them to meet again.
9. The poem 'Keeping Quiet' teaches us to take out some time from our busy schedules to introspect ourselves. It also teaches us to
stop being self-centered. It believes in the adage 'Live and let Live'. The world would be a much better and happier place to live in
if we follow the principles of unity, harmony and brotherhood.
Section B
10. Mr. M.Hamel was a French teacher who had been teaching for forty years in the school at Alsace. He was a strict teacher who
always kept an iron ruler under his arm in order to punish the children for not doing their work. He thought for the welfare of the
children and their better future. He was disciplined and honest towards his duties. Having heard about the order that came from
Berlin, he got too depressed & emotional on his last day. He taught everybody the importance of his mother tongue and requested
them to guard their language because it is the only key to escape from the prison of slavery. He was very honest, patriotic and hard
working person. He believed that French was the clearest and logical language. He knew that was his last day in the school, yet he
performed his duties seriously and taught his last lesson in the class with great patience which shows how dutiful he was towards
his duties. He held himself and the parents responsible for the poor performance of the people of Alsace. All the students and
villagers present in the class had tears and regret in their eyes for not knowing their own language. After teaching them the
lessons, M. Hamel stood up and tried to say something but his throat got choked then he bade farewell to the students by writing
“Vive La France “on the board which means ‘long live France’.
OR
Society and adults play a very important role in motivating young learners to take education seriously. They have gone through
this stage and can guide us on the right track through their experience. This can also be seen in the lesson “The Last Lesson” by
Alphanso Daudet. This story is of a boy Franz who took his studies as a burden and a teacher M. Hamel who took the noble
profession like teaching to be a joke. However, during the latter part of the story, it was M. Hamel only who gave rise to a feeling
of remorse in the mind of Franz not to take the French language seriously and went on praising the language to be the most logical
and clear. With this, one can see that it was M. Hamel who motivated young Franz to think nice about the language and pay his
complete undivided attention to the Last Lesson.

11. The narrator sees her mother dozing looking pale as a corpse. The mother’s pale face arouses the narrator’s childhood fears of
losing her mother but she cannot stay on. She accepts her mother’s ageing as a natural process. She hides her pain and guilt under
a smile. The narrator delves on the complexities of life in which we have to strike a balance and sometimes part with our dear
ones as we have other commitments.
OR
The tone of this poem is predominantly pensive and sorrowful. The poet suddenly notices that her mother looks as old as she is.
This could have surprised her since she only sees her mother during holidays and not on a daily basis. However, it does not
surprise her because she has always been aware of the certainty of her mother's death.
As she does when she turns away from her mother to look at the trees and the children, she has chosen not to think about losing
her mother anytime soon. Yet, that fear has always plagued her, and it plagues her still. This saddens her and one can see her silent
tears even when she has forced herself to smile.

Subject:- Inappropriate teacher-student ratio in certain schools
Respected Sir,
Through the revered columns of your newspaper, I would like to draw your attention to a few important problems. I am a social
worker and I have been noticing that good schools are admitting as many as 50-60 students in a section just to make extra money
which is adversely affecting the academic standard of the schools. In my opinion, this is an unfair practice. This inappropriate
teacher-student ratio is creating an extra load on teachers. Due to this teachers are not able to deliver quality education in schools,
despite parents paying a huge fee to the schools.
I shall consider it a great favour if you will publish this topic in your newspaper.
Yours faithfully,
Girish Bhardwaj

Subject: Simple weddings better than exuberant ones
Sir,
Through the medium of this letter, I would like to express my concern over the meaningless display of wealth during weddings
these days. In the present day, lavish weddings have become a trend. Hotels, farmhouses and banquet halls are booked months in
advance. Even lower-middle-class families are entertaining more than a thousand guests and consequently, they have to pay debts
for months and sometimes for years too. No stone is left unturned to fulfill the desire of pretentiousness of being affluent in front
of society. There is no denying of the fact that a wedding is indeed an important occasion but this moment of joy should not
become a burden for families. We need to invite only our relatives and close friends for a wedding. An overcrowded gathering
only leads to chaos and unnecessary expenditure. It is always better to have a simple wedding ceremony and an amount can be set
aside to give to the couple to start their new life.
I hope my letter gets some space in your newspaper so that, through this trusted medium, people understand that money should
not unnecessarily be wasted on exuberant wedding celebrations but should be used to invest in building the foundation of a happy
married life.
Yours sincerely
Ram
15. Funds for Poor and Old Widows
by XYZ, Secretary, Social Club
Shahibabad, 27th November, 20XX: Our school organised various cultural activities between the 17th and 22nd of November,
20XX with a goal to collect funds for the old widows living in abject poverty at places such as Vrindavan, Benaras, etc. Our
Social Club was extremely keen to help these poor and old widows who live in most pathetic and miserable conditions. Keeping
in view the onset of winters, the focus was on collecting warm and woollen clothes, blankets and quilts.
As the part of our initiative, we organised a music and dance extravaganza, in which an entertaining show was put up by students
and local singers and musicians. Our Club also put up a fete in which the members sold artifacts made by them. Through our
sincere endeavour, we managed to collect three lakh rupees. We presented the cheque together with the collected clothes and other
articles to the local NGO, which is doing serious work to uplift these widows. In order to help such women lead a better life in
humane conditions, our Club has pledged to work for their welfare on a regular basis.

LOCAL TOUR
- By Namit / Namita (XI-A)
On the 9th of October last year, a local tour was organized for all the students of the school. The students were informed well in
advance. They reached the school in time and boarded the assigned buses at sharp 8.30 a.m. escorted by their respective class
teachers.
A sumptuous refreshment like light snacks, and Frooti, etc. was relished by the students while travelling. All the students were
very happy and sung sang while making merry.
The students were very happy when they reached the first spot i.e., Gandhi Smriti Bhawan. They noted the important information
in the notebooks.
The next destination was Humayun's Tomb. The students and the teachers had their lunch on the outer lawns. When they entered
the premises, they were taken aback by its sheer beauty. It was a magnificent monument with well-manicured lawns. There were
fountains amidst numerous small square ponds. It was an extremely beautiful view.
The students were then asked by the teachers to form queues again to move to the next spot - that was Rail Bhawan. They had a
glimpse of the journey of railways in India Since 1953. It was fascinating. The bus reached the school at 5.00 p.m. The students
were tired but happy. They bade goodbye to the teachers and moved to their respective homes.
