1 Introduction

1.1 Project Description

Ministry of Railways (MOR), Government of India has planned to construct a
High Axle Load Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) covering about 3325 km on
two Corridors, one on Western part and the other on eastern part of India. The
Western Corridor extends from Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Mumbai to Tughlakabad/
Dadri near Delhi. The construction of this 1483 km long corridor (JNPT –
Ahmadabad – Palanpur – Rewari – Asaoti - Dadri) is planned to be implemented
in two phases (Figure 1.1), the first phase encompassing 935 km stretch between
Vadodara and Rewari. The project entails the assemblage of double-track
electrified railway lines capable of handling 32.5 ton axle load, longer trains and
double stack containers. The bridges and other structures along the corridor will be
designed to allow movement of 32.5 ton axle load while the rail tracks connecting
structures will be designed for 25 ton axle load operating at maximum train speed
of up to 100 km/hr.

2 Site Description

2.1 Location and Description

The project site under DP-2 starts from Indian Railways (IR) chainage 272.810
(near Kishangarh, Distt. Ajmer, Rajasthan) and extends up to IR chainage 631.000
(near Iqbalgarh, Distt. Banaskantha, Gujarat). The 358.19 km long route travels
from two different states (Rajasthan and Gujarat) with varying topographical,
geographical and geological features along it.

Situated in the foothills of Aravalli mountain range, a large variation in ground

elevation has been noted. The topography of the site is dominated by rocky and
hilly terrain. The route crosses number of rivers, natural streams, existing roads
and existing IR tracks. All of this calls for construction of various structures along
the proposed WDFC route such as cross-drainage structures (bridges and
culverts), grade-separators (railway flyovers, ROB and underpasses) as well as
viaducts.

The site of major bridge no. 379 is situated between Makrera and Sardhana
stations in the state of Rajasthan. The distance between existing IR bridge and the
proposed DFC bridge is about 41.5 m. This bridge is proposed to cross a local
stream. The site was observed to be dry location when visited in the month of
November 2013.

2.2 Regional Geology

Geologically the site of DP-2 is part of the Delhi and Aravalli systems and it can
be further divided into several groups and formations.

Doc No.: DOC/CTP2/DGN/GB/208- Rev.0

Page 5
The rocks in Ajmer region occur from Deyi in the north-east through Kishangarh
to Sarwar area, underlying the marwar plains and comprises meta-sedimentary
sequences with associated magmatic complex and igneous rocks. The main Aravalli
range extending from Rupnagar in north to Todgarh in south is occupied by the
rocks of Delhi Supergroup which comprises calcareous, argillacious and
arenaceous meta-sedimentary sequences with associated basic volcanics and
igneous rocks. The rocks of this region have been complexly folded and faulted,
metamorphosed and magmatised during orogenic episodes related to different
geological cycles. The geological sequence in Ajmer region as worked out by
Geological Survey of India is shown as under.

Formation

The geology of site towards and within Gujarat end is dominated by quartzites,
phyllites and schists. Quartzites being hard and resistant to weathering action, form
steep narrow ridges with serrated tops arranged along the strike, while valleys and
plains are occupied by phyllites and schists, these being soft. Granites typically
form low to high hills with loose boulders of large dimensions standing insitu; thus
granite country can easily be recognized from a distance. The region also falls
under Archaeans group and indicates old age of the formations. Archaeans are the
oldest groups of rocks forming the basement for later formations. They are

Doc No.: DOC/CTP2/DGN/GB/208- Rev.0

Page 6
mineral bearing and thus have importance from the point of view of potential
wealth. The major formations under this group in this region are: Banded Gneissic
complex rocks, which are of highly intricate and varied gneissic complex; they are
mostly of igneous origin, but on account of interfoliar injection, they have a
general northerly foliation strike, and are continuous with gneissic complex of
Central Mewar. Rocks of Aravalli and Delhi systems such as Erinpura granite is
also common in this region.

The geological observations at MJB 379 indicate the presence of metamorphic

mica-schist rock.

2.3 Seismicity
Seismic hazard levels in India are defined in IS 1893 (2002), Part 1, which classifies
India into four distinct seismic zones (Figure 2.2). In accordance with IS 1893 the
DP-2 site can be classified in Zone II (towards Rajasthan side) and Zone III
(towards Gujarat side), i.e. a low to moderate seismic intensity zone. Zone II
corresponds to a Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA), or Z factor, of 0.1g for
seismic design, while Zone III corresponds to 0.16g as the zone factor of the
PGA. The site for MJB 379 falls in Zone II.

3 Ground Investigation

3.1 Scope
Ground investigation data in the form of boring & lithological logs and laboratory
test results were provided by L&T for review and preparation of this report. The
ground investigation was designed and supervised by L&T between September
2013 and February 2014. Drilling of four exploratory boreholes viz, BH-1 to BH-4
upto specified depth was carried out with sampling, locating water table, field and
lab testing as main activities. The locations of drilled boreholes with respect to
proposed DFC Bridge on WDFC alignment plan is shown in Annexure 1 (Sub-soil
profile).

3.2 Field Testing

Standard penetration tests (SPT) were performed along with split barrel sampling
(disturbed samples). SPT was conducted as per IS 2131 (1981). When rebound or
refusal was resulted during SPT attempt, the drilling bit was changed to TC
(tungsten carbide) or diamond and core recovery, RQD (rock quality designation)
both were measured.

The logs of boring and drilling with field observations are included in Annexure 3.

3.3 Laboratory Testing

Soil and rock laboratory testing was performed on selected (disturbed and
undisturbed) samples recovered during drilling of boreholes. Results from the
laboratory testing are included in Annexure 3. The laboratory testing comprised
the following:

Soil

 Particle size distribution

 Consistency Limits
 Bulk density and moisture content
 Specific gravity
 Direct Shear test
 Chemical analysis (pH, sulphate and chloride content)

Rock
 Density
 Porosity and water absorption
 Uniaxial compressive strength (UCS)
 Point load

4 Design Methodology

4.1 General
Geotechnical design of foundations for bridges is primarily based on IRS-2003.
However, other relevant guidelines and standards, such as BIS, FHWA and IRC
have been referred when IRS does not cover any design case. The results of the
ground investigation, field and laboratory testing work have been analyzed to
arrive at geotechnical design parameters.

4.2 Foundation Assessment

4.2.1 Ground conditions

Ground investigation at MJB 379 reveals the presence of 4.5 m to 6.0 m thick silty
sand deposit in medium dense to dense condition. These soil deposits overlay
completely weathered grade V rock followed by weathered grade III Mica-schist
rock. The weathering condition of this rock was found as highly and moderately
weathered up to the explored depth of 20.0 m. Total core recovery (CR) in grade V
and grade IV rock varied from 11% to 31% with RQD value ranging between 0%
and 22%. CR and RQD in grade III rock varied from 15% to 69% and 0% to 57%
respectively. The maximum depth of exploration was 20.0 m. It is evident that the
core recovery was poor and good quality cores were generally not recovered from
the rocky strata. Also, not much information was obtained for completely
weathered rock stratum (except refusal SPT). This material whose state and
behaviour neither resemble soil nor rock, is termed as intermediate geo material
(IGM) (refer IRC 78- amendment 68, FHWA (2006)).

4.2.2 Scour consideration

The maximum scour levels (MSL) have been referred from hydrology report
(refer- DOC/CTP2/DGN/BR/303). When the stratum below soil deposits is of
IGM and rocky nature, the scour levels based on soil silt factor cannot be extended
in such strata. Hence MSLs have been restricted at the top of IGM and rocky
strata. Computations of silt factor based on available grain size analysis results are
included in Annexure 2.

4.2.3 Depth of foundation

When the shallow foundation is resting in soil, a minimum foundation depth of

1.75 m below maximum scour level needs to be provided as per IRS 2003. In case
non-scourable bed (IGM or rock) governs the maximum scour level the minimum
embedment within such strata shall be 1.5 m. However when the foundation is
resting on rocks with UCS > 10 MPa, the minimum embedment shall reduce to
0.6 m. This approach is in line with IRC 78, 2000. At MJB 379, the founding level
for abutments and piers have been decided after review of existing IR bridge’s
founding level, i.e. 439.333 mRL. This gives deeper founding level than what can

Doc No.: DOC/CTP2/DGN/GB/208- Rev.0

Page 9
be arrived from analysis (i.e. MSL - 1.75 m). The recommended founding level for
all abutments and piers at MJB 379 is 438.833 mRL, i.e. 0.5 m below existing IR
bridge founding level.

4.2.4 Bearing Capacity

When no core recovery (CR) or core recovery of less than 35% was achieved from
the weathered rock strata below foundation, the bearing capacity estimation shall
be based on IS 6403 and IS 1904, i.e. treating it as soil deposit, as per IRS-2003.
The shear strength parameters (cohesion and angle of internal friction) adopted for
estimation of bearing capacity in such strata are considered to be zero kPa and 36o,
respectively, based on engineering judgment and to be on safe side. The detailed
computations are included in Annexure 2. When footings are resting in sandy
stratum, phi value is used after review of available direct shear test results within
that stratum. Refer Annexure 2 for detailed calculations.

4.2.5 Settlement

Estimation of settlement in cohesionless (sandy) strata is based on IS 8009 part 1

Figure 9. Settlement value (for 100 kPa bearing pressure) corresponding to average
SPT N (averaged up to a depth equal to 1.5 times the width of footing) is read
from Figure 9 in IS 8009 part 1. It is then multiplied to actual live load pressure
and then corrected for rigidity, depth and water table, as applicable.

The IGMs and rocks are stiff and strong enough that bearing capacity and
settlement considerations generally do not govern the design of spread footing
supported on such a material. As settlement estimate is necessary for shallow
foundations supported on an IGM or rock, a method based on elasticity theory is
probably the best approach (FHWA -2006), which uses following equation.

Where, δV : vertical settlement at surface

Cd : shape and rigidity factors ( given in Table 8-13 of FHWA-2006)
Δp : change in stress at top of rock surface due to applied footing load
Bf : footing width
ν : Poisson’s ratio
Em : Young’s modulus of rock mass

As per IRS-2003, the settlement shall not normally exceed 25 mm after the end of
the construction period for bridges with simply supported spans. Based on this,
the settlement due to design Live Load has been checked. Settlement
computations based on each borehole are presented in Annexure 2.

Doc No.: DOC/CTP2/DGN/GB/208- Rev.0

Page 10
4.2.6 Groundwater

Groundwater table was not encountered in any borehole during its measurement
in the month of October 2013. For design purpose in this report, the ground water
table is considered at the ground surface to account for worst case scenario at the
water body crossing bridge.

4.3 Design Parameters

4.3.1 Unit weight

Unit weights of encountered deposits have been determined after review of the
test results when available or it is assigned based on engineering judgment and
published literature (e.g. Look G. Burt, 2007). Below table presents the unit
weights of deposits which are encountered at the three bridges.

Table 4.1 Design unit weights

4.3.2 Rock-Weathering

The following weathering grades of bedrock are considered when determining the
geotechnical design parameters:

Table 4.2 Summary of weathering grades

Degree of Weathering Grade
Completely weathered V
Highly weathered IV
Moderately weathered III

4.3.3 Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS)

Depending on the type of rock sample recovered from the borehole, i.e. a good
core of about 10 cm length or a smaller piece, either UCS or point load test was
conducted, respectively. It is noted that the variation of compressive strength
within one geological feature is significant. The results of UCS and point loads, as
available, are summarized in the below table. As per IS 8764-1998, Section 1.3, test
results with point load strength index less than 1 MPa are not reliable and hence
have been discarded.

4.3.4 Deformation Modulus (E or Em)

No laboratory or field tests were conducted to determine the deformation modulus

in IGM or rock at MJB 379. Based on the review of the available data at all
locations and considering the variation in the test results, the deformation modulus
for IGMs, i.e. Completely weathered Gr V and Highly weathered Gr IV rocks with
CR<35% is taken as 60 MPa.
