(Answer all questions)
A cantilever beam of length 250 mm having circular cross section is loaded as
1. (2)

C40 steel. Assume n=3.
A shaft is subjected to bending moment of M= 550 N.m, determine the maximum
2. (2)
stress induced in the shaft.
3. Determine the safe load that can be carried by a plate of thickness 10mm, limiting (2)
the design stress to 130 MPa and taking stress concentration into account.
Tutorial-2 (Fatigue loading) 28/01/2025
(Answer all questions)
4. A circular bar of 500 mm length is supported freely at its two ends. It is acted upon (3)
by a central concentrated transverse load having a minimum value of 20 kN and a
maximum value of 50 kN. Determine the diameter of bar by taking a factor of safety
of 2, size effect of 0.85, surface finish factor of 0.9. The material properties of bar
are given by ultimate strength of 650 MPa, yield strength of 500 MPa and endurance
strength of 350 MPa.
5. A C40 steel shaft of uniform diameter with a keyway is subjected to a variable (3)
torsional load that fluctuates between 2 kN.m to 5 kN.m along with a B.M varying
from 10 kN.m to 12 kN.m. The stress concentration factor for the keyway in bending
and torsion may be taken as 1.6 and 1.3 respectively. Determine the required
diameter of the shaft. Assume FoS= 2.5.
Tutorial-3 (Welded joints) 11/02/2025
(Answer all questions)
6. Two 10mm thickness plates are is welded to another plate on both sides by (2)
symmetrical parallel welds to withstand an axial load P= 400kN. Determine the
length of the weld, when the load applied is (a) static (b) dynamic.
7. An angle section is to be welded to a steel plate by unsymmetrical parallel fillet (2)
welds along the longer leg of the angle section. The weld size is 10mm and
allowable shear stress for static loading may be taken as 100 MPa. The distance
between the C.G axis and the edges of angle section are 39 and 86 mm
respectively. If the angle is subjected to a static load of 100 kN, calculate the length
of weld at the top and bottom.
8. A bracket is welded to a side column with a permissible shear stress of 90 MPa. (2)
Determine the maximum load (P) that the bracket can withstand if the weld size is
10 mm.
9. Determine the size of weld for the bracket, if the maximum shear stress in the weld (2)
is 80 MPa.
Tutorial-4 (Vibrations) 21/03/2025
(Answer all questions)
10. The frequency of a damped vibration is 70 cycles per minute and the amplitude
decreases by 70% of its initial value after two oscillations. Determine the natural
frequency of the system.
11 A machine mounted on springs and fitted with a dashpot has a mass of 90 kg. There
are four springs, each of stiffness 13 N/mm. The amplitude of vibrations reduces
from 42.4 mm to 8.4 mm in two complete oscillations. Determine (i) damping
coefficient (ii) time period of damped oscillations
12 A machine of 20kg mass is mounted on springs and dashpots. The equivalent
stiffness of the spring is 10 N/mm and damping coefficient is 0.25 N.s/mm.
The system is initially at rest and a velocity of 150mm/s is imparted to the mass at
t=0. Determine the amplitude of the oscillation and phase angle.
13 A mass of 10 kg is suspended from one end of a helical spring; the other end being
fixed. The stiffness of the spring is 10 N/mm. The viscous damping causes the
amplitude to decrease to one-tenth of the initial value in four complete oscillations.
If a periodic force of 150sin50t N is applied at the mass in the vertical direction,
determine the steady state amplitude of the forced vibrations. Also calculate its
value at resonance.
14 A machine has a mass of 120 kg and unbalanced reciprocating parts of mass 2.5 kg
which move through a vertical stroke of 80 mm with simple harmonic motion.
Neglecting damping, calculate the total stiffness of the spring so that the force
transmitted to the foundation is 1/25th of the applied force, when the speed of
rotation of machine crank shaft is 750 rpm. If under actual working conditions of the
machine, it is found that the damping reduces the amplitude of successive free
vibrations by 25%. Determine. the amplitude of the forced vibration of the machine
at resonance.
Tutorial-5 (Vibrations) 26/03/2025
(Answer all questions)
15 A machine part of mass 2 kg vibrates in a viscous medium. Determine the damping
coefficient when a harmonic force of 25 N results in a resonant amplitude of 12.5
mm with a period of 0.2 seconds.
16 A system of beam supports a mass of 1200 kg. The motor has an unbalanced mass of
1 kg located at 6 cm radius. It is known that the resonance occurs at 2210 rpm. What
amplitude of vibration can be expected at the motors operating speed of 1440 rpm if
the damping factor is assumed to be 0.1.
17 A machine of one tonne mass is acted upon by an external force of 2450 N at a
frequency of 1500rev/min. To reduce the effect, vibration isolators of rubber having
static deflection of 2 mm under the machine load and on estimated damping factor
0.2 are used. Determine (i) force transmitted to the foundation, (ii) amplitude of
vibration of machine, and (iii) the phase lag.
18 A shaft 14 mm diameter rotates in long bearings and a disc of mass 16 kg is secured
to a shaft at the middle of its length. The span of the shaft between the bearing is 1.2
m. The mass center of the disc is 0.4 mm from the axis of the shaft. Neglecting the
mass of the shaft and taking E = 200 GN/m²,Determine critical speed of rotation in
r.p.m.,
