PREAMBLE
AICTE Council has mandated all the 4-year Technical Degree Enrolled students to Earn
100/75/50/25 Activity Points as per the Instructions. Today, India has seen enormous development
in Urban Infrastructure. Except for the pollution and increased expenses for lifestyle, Urban India
has all basic infrastructures such as Education, Health, Transport, Employment, Food and Special
Services at the reachable levels. At the same time, Rural India has not seen any development in
the accessibility of the basic infrastructures. They have to travel long distances to access even a
small basic infrastructure. Though pollution and expenses for lifestyle are very less in Rural Areas,
people are migrating to the urban areas as they need Basic Infrastructures than the other facilities
available in Rural India. As per the experts, if at all Urban India has seen enormous development
it is due to the:

• Engineering Solutions
• Engineering Implementations
• Engineering Employments

Though engineering contribution is more in the development there are other

segments that contributed to the sustainable Urban Infrastructure such as
• Health
• Education
• Dwelling Places
• Government Policies

HELPING LOCAL SCHOOLS TO ACHIEVE GOOD RESULTS AND

ENHANCE THEIR ENROLMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION

INTRODUCTION

A quality education is one that focuses on the whole child—the social, emotional, mental, physical, and
cognitive development of each student regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or
geographic location. It prepares the child for life, not just for testing.

It provides resources and directs policy to ensure that each child enters school healthy and learns about
and practices a healthy lifestyle; learns in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for
students and adults; is actively engaged in learning and is connected to the school and broader
community; has access to personalized learning and is supported by qualified, caring adults; and is
challenged academically and prepared for success in college or further study and for employment and
participation in a global environment.

Quality education provides the outcomes needed for individuals, communities, and societies to prosper.
It allows schools to align and integrate fully with their communities and access a range of services across
sectors designed to support the educational development of their students.
Poor quality education is leading to poor learning outcomes in India, ultimately pushing children out of
the education system and leaving them vulnerable to child labor, abuse and violence. Many classrooms
continue to be characterized by teacher-centered rote learning, corporal punishment and discrimination.

A quality education is supported by three key pillars: ensuring access to quality teachers; providing use
of quality learning tools and professional development; and the establishment of safe and supportive
quality learning environments.
We must make sure that a Quality Education is just that – an education that serves each child
pedagogically and developmentally. An education that is inclusive and is structured to realize the
potential of each child regardless of location or economic status.
Since March 2020, schools in India have been closed and learning has shifted to remote home-based
learning for those who can access it. School closures will impact learning across the education system.
Gains in enrolment, school completion, and learning must not get eroded due to the combination of
schools being closed and socio-economic hardships related to Covid-19.

India is now looking at delivering education programmes differently and speedily to employ solutions,
that accelerate impact and achieve scale across interventions targeted at children and adolescents.
IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY EDUCATION

A quality education is the foundation of sustainable development, and therefore of the Sustainable
Development Goals. As a policy intervention, education is a force multiplier which enables self-reliance,
boosts economic growth by enhancing skills, and improves people’s lives by opening up opportunities
for better livelihoods.

➢ It Improve Academic Perform

Getting access to quality education will help the students to have more knowledge and
understanding of their course of study in school. It will help to boost their morale to learn and
study this will improve their performance in class.
Teachers must ensure they train, guide and impact positively right education
which will improve their skills, ability and capability to learn.

➢ Competitive Advantage
It is of great benefits for students that have opportunity to learn in a well-equipped and conducive
environment to compete against their peers in the society because they have pass through various
rigorous process of learning. Unlike some students who are not well train, they only pass through
the school without knowing the basis of education. Having access to quality education will help
in securing one’s future for a better tomorrow.

➢ Ascertain Future
Without quality education students will not be able to comprehend with what they are learning in
school. They may also tend to give up on the pursuit of their future career. But with quality
education, the students will have the ability and capability to solve various issues affecting their
academic path. Students will be able to choose their professions through he course they study in
school. It will also give a clear direction of what a student intends to become in future.

➢ Adequate Knowledge
Students will be able to gain more knowledge and understanding through the right educational
practices. It will help them to be independent in whatever the situation they find themselves,
within and outside the school. All educational stakeholders must ensure they provide tutors and
valuable educators that will direct the affairs of students properly, so as to boost their knowledge
and experience.
➢ Improves Students Study Skills
The potential to learn and study will increase since the quality of education is reflected through
student’s academic performance. Education should not be taken with levity hands. Students will
have better knowledge of reading when books are available. They will be prompted to learn when
they have a conducive environment for learning.
It is of great importance to provide quality education that will help to boost the morale of students
to learn. All educators must also ensure they provide a conducive environment for students to
learn. Parents and guardian should also send their children or wards to the best school for them to
learn.

➢ Contextualization and Relevance

Quality education cannot be based on a blueprint that is applicable in all situations. Solutions and
adaptations of education systems must be based on the real needs of a country and/or community.

➢ Child-friendly Teaching and Learning

Quality education puts the child in the center and helps it to reach his or her full potential. Quality
Education requires children’s active participation.

➢ Sustainability
Educational change processes often need time to be realized.

➢ Balanced Approach
Quality education aims at developing a balanced set of capabilities of children they require to
become economically productive, develop sustainable livelihoods, contribute to peaceful and
democratic societies and enhance individual well-being.

➢ Learning Outcomes
After completing a certain level of education, children must have developed a minimum standard
of skills. Quality education requires a results-oriented approach.
ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED

1. Prepared Activity Worksheets & Anchor Charts

I prepared activity worksheets for students of Grade 4. In total, 30 activity worksheets were
prepared having 5 sheets per subject. I covered Kannada, English, Mathematics, Science, EVS
and General Knowledge. I took references from 4th Grade textbooks and also from the internet
resources. Also, I made an anchor chart of Plant Life Cycle depicting the growth of a plant from
a seed. All these were prepared in online mode and attached.

2. Collected Books
I was able to collect 5 books from my neighbors and my old books which I had preserved.
These books will go into the library for students. I hope these books will be beneficial and
enhances students’ ability to read, learn and understand.
OBSERVATION & LEARNING

I always wanted to do some service in the field of Quality Education and this was a wonderful opportunity
to work on.

✓ It made me realize the difficulties students are facing due to online schooling and learning, which
has been a big barrier to students.

✓ Examination and assignments are an indispensable part of academic exercise.

✓ Practicing worksheets make students to understand a concept better.

✓ I was happy to have done something for students which will be really helpful for them.

✓ Book reading should be an important routine for all the students.

ACTIVITY 2: DEVELOPING AN EFFICIENT GARBAGE
DISPOSAL SYSTEM

INTRODUCTION TO EFFICIENT GARBAGE DISPOSABLE SYSTEM

Waste management (or waste disposal) includes the activities and actions required to manage
waste from its inception to its final disposal. This includes the collection, transport, treatment
and disposal of waste, together with monitoring and regulation of the waste management
process and waste-related laws, technologies, economic mechanisms.

Waste can be solid, liquid, or gaseous and each type has different methods of disposal and
management. Waste management deals with all types of waste, including industrial, biological,
household, municipal, organic, biomedical, radioactive wastes. In some cases, waste can pose a
threat to human health. Health issues are associated throughout the entire process of waste
management. Health issues can also arise indirectly or directly. Directly, through the handling of
said waste, and indirectly through the consumption of water, soil and food. Waste is produced by
human activity, for example, the extraction and processing of raw materials. Waste management
is intended to reduce adverse effects of waste on human health, the environment, planetary
resources and aesthetics.

Waste management practices are not uniform among countries (developed and developing
nations); regions (urban and rural areas), and residential and industrial sectors can all take
different approaches.

Proper management of waste is important for building sustainable and liveable cities, but it
remains a challenge for many developing countries and cities. A report found that effective waste
management is relatively expensive, usually comprising 20%–50% of municipal budgets.
Operating this essential municipal service requires integrated systems that are efficient,
sustainable, and socially supported. A large portion of waste management practices deal
with municipal solid waste (MSW) which is the bulk of the waste that is created by household,
industrial, and commercial activity. Measures of waste management include measures for
integrated techno-economic mechanisms of a circular economy, effective disposal facilities,
export and import control and optimal sustainable design of products that are produced.

In the first systematic review of the scientific evidence around global waste, its management and
its impact on human health and life, authors concluded that about a fourth of all the municipal
solid terrestrial waste is not collected and an additional fourth is mismanaged after collection,
often being burned in open and uncontrolled fires – or close to one billion tons per year when
combined. They also found that broad priority areas each lack a "high-quality research base",
partly due to the absence of "substantial research funding", which motivated scientists often
require. Electronic waste (e-waste) includes discarded computer monitors, motherboards, mobile
phones and chargers, compact discs (CDs), headphones, television sets, air conditioners and
refrigerators. According to the Global E-waste Monitor 2017, India generates ~ 2 million tonnes
(Mte) of e-waste annually and ranks fifth among the e-waste producing countries, after the US,
P.R. China, Japan and Germany.
IMPORTANCE OF SEGGREGATION OF WET WASTE AND DRY
WASTE

If waste is not separated properly, it all gets mixed up in landfills. Waste segregation basically
means keeping wet and dry wastes separately so that dry can be recycled and wet waste can be
composted. The government of India is pretty serious about this. According to the Solid Waste
Management Rules, 2016, generators (which refers to citizens like you and me) are the ones
responsible for segregating waste into three distinct categories — wet, dry and hazardous. We
are also supposed to personally hand over the three separated categories to authorized
collectors.

When we segregate waste at home daily, we are winning half the battle as a responsible citizen.
This habit will considerably bring down the problems for our municipal authorities to manage
solid waste. The best part is, neither does it cost us any extra money nor does it take up much
time. The only thing we need is awareness and the desire to act on it.

Segregation at the source is necessary for recycling in the same way solar panels need to be
placed in direct sunlight to generate solar energy. When we segregate waste at home, it helps the
waste pickers and disposal workers to tell the degradable components from the non-
biodegradable ones.
Bio-Degradable Waste

1. Vegetable

2. Fruits

3. Flowers

4. Leaves from garden

5. Wood shavings, pencil shavings

Non-Bio Degradable Waste

1. Plastics

2. Paper

3. Glass

4. Metal

5. Frooti, and other tetrapaks

6. Dusting cloth

7. Aluminium foil
When we separate our dry waste into smaller categories like paper, plastic, cardboard and metal,
we can easily sell them for a small price to the scrap dealer. He will eventually pass them on to
the manufacturers who will use them as raw materials in recycled products. What was “rubbish”
in our household goes on to acquire new value in the manufacturing process. It will be used to
make a functional product. When we segregate waste at home, we are also contributing to the
nation’s economy and reducing the pollution load at the same time.

Good for the pickers

Segregation protects health. When waste pickers put their hands into the waste to clean it up, it
results in cuts that further lead to infections, resulting in deterioration of a waste picker’s health.
It becomes our responsibility to help these waste pickers by carefully segregating the waste
that is generated in our homes.

Good for the planet

Waste segregation is included in law because it is much easier to recycle. Effective segregation
of wastes means that less waste goes to landfill which makes it cheaper and better for people and
the environment. It is also important to segregate for public health. In particular, hazardous
wastes can cause long term health problems, so it is very important that they are disposed of
correctly and safely and not mixed in with the normal waste coming out of your home or office.
ACTIVITES CONDUCTED

1. WASTE SEGGREGATION AT HOME AND COLONY

I saw that in my area people were unaware of segregation of waste idea, I emphasized
them to segregate the waste and also told them what all difficulties are faced by the
people at waste disposal area while segregating them. I also incorporated this activity at
my home as well and was also appreciated for this task. Some of the attachments have
been provided in the attachment sections.

2. CONDUCTED SURVEY
Conducted an online survey through google forms where my relatives and friends filled
the form. They answered all the required questions that I had mentioned in the survey
and got a good response from them. I got response from 12 people out of which 11
people agreed to take part in the survey conducted. Results and findings of the survey
has been provided in Results & Findings section.

3. MADE PAPER BAGS

Nowadays we see that there is an excessive use of plastic bags which have become a part
of everyone’s daily household work. In this particular activity, I made paper bags,
distributed them in nearby shops and laid stress on them to use paper bags instead of
plastic bags. I also explained the harmful effect it causes to the environment and the
advantages of using paper bags: -
● Paper bags are eco-friendly
● Paper bags are fashionable
● Paper bags are sturdier and can hold more items
● Recycling and decomposing paper bags is easy

OBSERVATIONS AND LEARNINGS

The entire experience was quite amazing and I got to learn a lot from those
⮚ The segregation of waste taught me about the difficulties faced by the waste pickers in
the waste disposal areas.
⮚ Post-collection segregation takes longer, costs more and can wind up harming the
environment if it leads to recyclable waste being sent to landfill. The simplest way to
solve this problem is to solve it before it starts by practicing proper on-site segregation of
waste. Clearly-marked containers for different kinds of waste and well-understood
recycling procedures can save space, time, money and effort in recycling your business’s
waste products.
⮚ Recycling is important, but separating hazardous and non-hazardous wastes is vital.
Hazardous waste requires special handling, and hazardous waste in non-hazardous
containers can cause serious problems. Since special handling tends to be more
expensive, you don’t want to waste money by disposing of non-hazardous waste in
hazardous waste containers.
⮚ Plastic bags cause environmental damage such as increase the level of air pollution.

⮚ Plastic bags not only have adverse effects on our natural habitats, death of many animals.

⮚ Plastic bags are not renewable and you need UV rays to destroy it, which is harmful
for environment.
⮚ Paper bags on the other hand are environment friendly and can be recycled.

⮚ Possessing a paper bag is practical and one can use them to bring groceries and the
premium quality paper bags can be used as paper gift bags.
⮚ We can choose paper bags with special properties that will seal the freshness and give
an aesthetic look to our brand as offset and screen printing is possible.

ACTIVITY 3: VOLUNTEER AT TEACH FOR INDIA

TEACH FOR INDIA VOLUNTEER PROGRAM - INTRODUCTION

Teach For India (TFI) is a non-profit and a movement of leaders that was founded by Shaheen
Mistri in 2009. It is a part of the Teach For All network. To build a growing movement of leaders,
Teach For India runs a two-year Fellowship and supports an Alumni movement. The Fellowship
recruit college graduates and working professionals to serve as full-time teachers in low-income
schools for two years. The mission of Teach For India is “one day all children will attain an
excellent education.

IMPORTANCE

Covid-19 pandemic had disastrous effects all over the world. It pushed back human development
by years for all concerned areas whether it be socio-economic, science, education etc. School
especially took a hard hit because of the sudden almost an year and a half break from regular
studies. Schools in India were shut from March, 2020 and only opened after 15 months or so. That
big a gap from regular schooling resulted in the students not only being pushed back by an
academic year but also forgetting what they had learned before. Teach for India mostly work with
kids that come from unprivileged backgrounds and already lack because of irregular schooling.
So, TFI started this volunteer program to get the students back to track.

ACTIVITIES

Each volunteer was assigned a school and class and also a fellow mentor who guided us throughout
the programme.
I volunteered from 12th July to 1st October 2021. We first had an onboarding session where we got
to know about the organization. It was an interactive session among all the volunteers where we
discussed about the education of backward class in our country.
I was assigned grade 9 students of GHS Kadapaswamy Mata in Bengaluru. My subject was
literacy. I was assigned 5 students, Savitha, Ananya, Manjunath, Sunil and Kavya. And my fellow
mentor was Sumanth.
I was given the responsibility of teaching literacy to students of grade 9 who were lagging among
the other students of their class. I had to prepare my own worksheets and teaching materials before
every class. I took 1 and a half hour every day to each individual student. Initially they took time
but at end of 3 months all the students were much improved.
Since a majority of the students came from a poor background and due to COVID situation, TFI
took the responsibility of educating those children by giving them phones and data facility in order
for them to attend online classes. Few of the parents were not supportive but yet TFI volunteers
and mentors tried to make them understand the importance of education for all in today’s
generation.
It was worth my time teaching those kids and to see them happy as they were satisfied that they
learnt sitting at home. Their parents too were very supportive and thankful for TFI.

The Time log and certificate of the programme is attached below.

LEARNINGS:

I realized through TFI that how many students were deprived of education due to the pandemic.
Many children were left behind in the academics because of lack of resources available to them.
I also learnt that not everyone can have quick grasping power, few need to be taught in a slow
pace for them to understand. It was my pleasure to have volunteered for TFI along with my
mentor’s support in order for me to prepare worksheets, activity sheets and teach them. It not
only gave me an opportunity to teach the kids but also got me connected to them.
