At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
a. explain materials as useful or harmful to humans and the environment
b. develop a sense of responsibility towards safe material handling
c. create a visual classification of useful and harmful materials

2. Subject Matter
Topic: Useful and Harmful Materials
Reference: Science Curriculum Guide p.64
Materials: Pictures of materials, worksheets, Ppt Presentation, Mystery bag,Manila paper
Skills to be developed:Critical thinking and Communication skills
Strategies: Interactive Discussion, storytelling, and Group work
Value Focus: Become aware and responsible in choosing, using, and disposing of materials
properly to keep oneself and the environment safe.

3. Procedure
A. Preparatory Activities
Prayer
May I request everyone to please stand up. May I call on somebody to lead us in prayer.

Greetings
Good morning, class! How are you today?

Checking of Attendance: Attendance Chant

Before we proceed, let me know first who are present with a twist.
I will sing first and if I call your name you say ”I’m here” and clap twice
“If you’re here and feeling bright, clap your hands” clap 2x
“When you hear your name, say “I’m here” clap 2x
(call names, students reply:”I’m here and clap 2x)

Behavior Check
Before we begin our class today, can someone give me a rule that we must follow inside the
classroom.
1. Follow the teachers order
2. Listen carefully and raise your hand if you want to speak.
3. Participate actively and do your best.
4. Be respectful and kind to everyone.
5. Dispose of your garbage properly in the trash bin.

Responsibility Pledge
"Now that we knew the classroom rules, let’s have a simple responsibility pledge.
Class, repeat after me:
I will follow. I will listen. I will participate. I will respect. I will keep our classroom clean.

Let’s make today a great day of learning

Now let’s make it more exciting!
I will group you into four groups, each group of students has a garden poster on the board.
Each time you participate and behave well, or answer correctly, I will add flowers in your
garden.
But if the group is noisy, misbehaves, or doesn't participate —I will put pest in your gardens

At the end of the lesson, the group with the most beautiful garden filled with flowers wins a
small reward.

Review
Before we begin our new lesson, let’s recall first our previous topics. I will show some pictures
and tell me whether they show solid, liquid, or gas.
Let’s begin!

Motivation
I have here with me a Mystery Bag! Inside this bag are different pictures of materials we often
see at home or in school.
I will call someone to pick an object in this mystery bag and describe the item without showing
it, you must read it aloud in front and let your classmates guess the answer .
(Pick an object)
I am clear, clean, and you drink me every day. What am I? (Water)
I am sharp and can cut things, but I can also hurt you if you’re not careful. What am I?
(scissors)
I can kill germs and clean floors, but you shouldn’t touch or drink me. What am I? (bleach)
I have pages, pictures, and stories. I am fun to read. What am I? (book)

B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation
Now, let me tell you a short story titled “Liza’s Busy Day”.
Listen carefully because I’ll ask you some questions after.
Liza woke up early to help her mother clean the house. She gathered some soap, water, a rag,
and bleach. After cleaning the floor, she saw her little brother playing near a broken glass bottle
in the yard. Liza quickly called her mother to safely pick it up. In the afternoon, she drank water,
ate fruits, and used scissors to cut papers for her school project. Before going to bed, she
reminded her mother to properly store the insect spray they used earlier in a safe place.

Let’s identify the materials mentioned in the story.

What materials did Liza use to clean the house?
Which materials in the story are useful?
Which materials are harmful?
How did Liza and her family handle harmful materials?
What should you do if you see broken glass at home or school?

2. Discussion

Those materials that you have mentioned based from the story are all around us. They can
either be useful or harmful to us or in the environment.
Now, let’s dive into our topic.

Useful Materials
When we talk about useful materials, we usually mean materials that can be reused, recycled,
or repurposed in everyday life or for various activities.
Examples:
Paper
Old newspapers, used bond paper, cartons — can be recycled or reused for crafts and writing.

Plastic
Plastic bottles, containers, caps — can be reused for storage, gardening (like plant pots), or
creative projects.

Glass
Jars and bottles — can be cleaned and used as containers or decorations.

Metal
Tin cans, bottle caps, and old utensils — can be reused for crafts or storage.

Cloth or Fabric
Old clothes, rags, or curtains — can be repurposed into bags, cleaning cloths, or costumes for
school programs.

Biodegradable Materials
Dried leaves, coconut husks, banana trunks — can be used for gardening or as compost.
In this picture can you tell me what it is made of?
Is it useful or harmful?

Harmful Materials
These are materials that can cause harm to people, animals, and the environment if not
handled or disposed properly.
Examples:
Broken Glass
Can cause cuts and injuries if not disposed of safely.

Expired Medicines
Harmful if accidentally taken or improperly thrown away, as they can pollute water sources.

Used Batteries
Contain chemicals like mercury and lead that can harm the soil and water if disposed of
carelessly.

Paint and Chemical Containers

Leftover chemicals can release harmful fumes and pollute the environment.

Plastic Waste (if burned)

When burned, it releases toxic fumes harmful to health and the environment.

Pesticides and Insecticides

Harmful to health when inhaled or accidentally ingested.

Gasoline are one of the poisons commonly found

at home. But plenty of other toxic or hazardous chemicals fill our shelves and cupboards, and
some of them may surprise you.
What other hazardous materials that can you find at home?
Why is it hazardous?

Ways of Proper Using,Choosing, and Disposing of Materials Properly

W1. Be Aware of the Materials Around You
-Look at the things you use at home, in school, and in your community.
-Learn to identify which materials are useful (like soap, clean water bottles, books) and which
ones can be harmful (like bleach, sharp objects, broken glass, expired food).

✅ 2. Choose Materials Wisely

-Pick materials that are safe to use and environment-friendly.
-Avoid using materials that can harm your health or the environment.
Example: Instead of plastic straws, use reusable straws or drink without one.
✅ 3. Use Materials Properly
-Follow instructions or labels before using a material.
-Ask for help from adults when using dangerous or harmful materials like cleaning chemicals.

✅ 4. Dispose of Materials Correctly

-Separate your trash: Put recyclable materials (like paper, plastic bottles, and cans) in one
container and non-recyclable or harmful materials (like broken glass, batteries, or used
chemicals) in another.
-Throw garbage in proper trash bins and never in rivers, streets, or playgrounds.

✅ 5. Practice the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle

Reduce waste by using less and choosing materials with less packaging.
Reuse materials like paper, bottles, and containers.

3.Exercises
Let’s have an activity called ‘Sorting Activity’
I will group you into 4 and I will give each group a set of pictures. You will sort them into useful and
harmful materials on your manila paper. After that, be ready to share your answers with the class
and explain your reasoning.

4. Generalization
- What are useful and harmful materials?
- Why is it important to know which materials are harmful or useful? How can being
responsible help keep us and the environment safe?
- Why do we need to classify materials properly?
C. Culminating Activities
I. Application
Now, let’s do an activity!
Directions: Look at the materials listed below. Write U if the material is useful and H if the material is
harmful.
1. ____ Plastic bottle
2. ____ Expired medicine
3. ____ Paper
4. ____ Broken glass
5.____ Wooden chair
And now, show how you will properly use or dispose of these materials at home.

IV. Evaluation
Let’s have another activity called “Responsible Handling of Materials – Role-Playing”
In the same groups, each group must have one representative to draw a topic from a box, and the
group must prepare a short roleplay showing the correct way to handle or dispose of products based on
the topic drawn.
 proper disposal of hazardous waste
 recycling plastics
 avoiding misuse of chemicals
 Recycling vegetables and fruit peels

V. Assignment
Class, for your assignment, I want you to explore more about useful and harmful materials at home.
Ask your parents or guardians to help you identify at least three materials you use every day. Then, tell
whether each one is useful or harmful and explain why. You may draw or paste pictures of those
materials on a short bond paper. We will check and share your answers in our next meeting. Be honest
and creative!
