NATIONAL MONUMENT
The National Monument, or "Monas" as it is popularly called, is one of the monuments
built during the Sukarno era of fierce nationalism. The top of the National Monument (Monas) is
Freedom Square. It stands for the people's determination to achieve freedom and the crowning of
their efforts in the Proclamation of Independence in August 1945. The 137-meter tall marble
obelisk is topped with a flame coated with 35 kg of gold. The base houses a historical museum
and a hall for meditations. The monument is open to the public and upon request the lift can
carry visitors to the top, which offers a bird's eye view on the city and the sea.
Go early to beat the crowds and the haze. It is easy for the less physically able as lifts take
visitors to the top. The diorama exhibition in the basement gives such a distorted view of
Indonesian history.
This imposing obelisk is Jakarta's most famous landmark. Construction started in 1961
under President Soekarno but was not completed until 1975, under President Soeharto. The
monument houses a couple of museums. The Freedom Hall depicts Indonesia's struggle for
independence through a series of dioramas, whereas the Hall of Contemplation displays the
original Declaration of Independence document and a recording of the speech.

THE YOUTH PLEDGE
Yogyakarta (28/10) – The Youth Pledge is a movement for the independence of the
Republic of Indonesia carried out by Indonesian youth by declaring the promise of one
homeland, one nation, and one language. The implementation of the values of the Youth Pledge
that must be practiced in daily life itself includes the values of cooperation, patriotism,
deliberation, love for the homeland, kinship, unity, kinship, love of peace, and responsibility.
The idea of holding the Second Youth Congress came from the Indonesian Student
Association (PPPI), a youth organization consisting of students from all over Indonesia. At
PPPI’s initiative, the congress was held in three different buildings and divided into three
meetings. This resulted in the Youth Pledge.

THE LEGENDS OF SI PAHIT LIDAH
Once upon a time, there lived a mighty young man named Serunting in Semidang, South
sumatra.
He was very powerful due to the fact that he was the son of a powerful giant and a
princess,
Princess Tenggang. Serunting had a brother-in-law named Arya Tebing, Arya Tebing's sister was
Serunting's wife.
The two young men quarreled becouse of Serunting's jealousy over Arya Tebing. Each of
them had rice paddies, side-by-side, separated by a decayed fallen tree. On this tree, some
mushroom grew.
The ones that grow overlooking Arya Tebing's rice paddy turned into gold, while those that
grew overlooking Seruntin's turned into useless thatch grass. This made Serunting envious. No
matter how hard he tried to move the tree, the mushroom overlooking Arya Tebing's rice paddy
remained gold.
Eventually, a violent fight broke out between them. Knowing that Serunting was mightier
than him, Arya Tebing gave up fighting. He persuaded his sister to find out Serunting's waekness.
She told Arya that Serunting concealed his soul in the highest thatch grass, which remained
unshaken evenmhen the wind blew on it.
The next day, both young men resumed their fight. Having learned the secret, Arya Tebing

WHY BOOKS ARE IMPORTANT FOR US
A wise man once said, “learning without book mean nothing.’ In my opinion this statement
is true. Why do I say that? This is for several reasons.
Firstly, books are important because they develop the minds of people who read them.
Even if you don’t agree with what an author has done in a book, you can at least have formed
your own ideas on what would have been better. This leads to critical thinking skills. These
critical thinking skills are a necessity for the development of cultures.
Secondly, book contains so much more than just the story. They record facts. They review
history. Books are the documentations of themes that relate to everyone. You can even learn
about a period in history just looking at what books were popular and published during that time.
For instance, the classic tales of two cities by Charles dickens is set in the French revolution era.
The last thing I’ll say is that books are essential to life because they do not only carry
knowledge, but they also entertain us. They entertain us with stories ranging from mystery and
drama to comedy, adventures and autobiographies. In other word, you can read book about
anything. These possibilities are limitless and that is one of the many lessons you can learn from
reading books.
Based on the reason listed above, it is obvious that books have a great influence in our
lives. Without book we may learn nothing.

TSUNAMI
We all know that tsunamis are a series of destructive waves and powerful. Tsunami is the
deadliest wave because the wave speed is incredibly fast. But do you know how a tsunami can
happens?
Tsunami originated from Japan, “tsu” meaning harbor and “nami” meaning wave. They are
normally caused by landslides, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions in, or close to an ocean. After
some sort of underwater disturbance, this causes energy to rise up to sea level pushing the water
high into the air. Gravity kicks in and pulls it down again and then consequently causing the
water to filter out into many different directions.
When a tsunami begins to approach the shore the energy in the wave is compressed. As a
result, the water is pushed up into the wave, resulting in a powerful tsunami. If the trough hits the
shoreline first, it then causes the tide to drastically retreat.
So, tsunamis happen because of natural disasters such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions.
People who live near the shoreline have to be careful because they are threatened by tsunamis
whenever there is an earthquake.
