HASTINGS RINGS End Gap Recommendation

Parker from Hastings Manufacturing provided end gap recommendations for the 6164 STD piston rings, including specific measurements for different applications and tolerances. D Carpenter requested these specifications after receiving a piston ring set without the usual documentation. The email exchange emphasizes the importance of following manufacturer settings for optimal performance in rebuilding engines.

Hi,

The End gaps for 6164 STD

At bore 3.498”
Top = .014” - .024”
2nd = .016” - .026”
Oil = .015” - .055”

The Min. End Gap recommendaons based on the Engine applicaon, we recommend for our Ring

Max. Gap = Min. Calculated Gap + .010” Tolerance
HMC oil ring gaps = .015” - .055”
*****Please Note that for every .001” increase in bore the end gap increases by .003” , So please
check your finished Bore spec. ******

Subject: No gap specs or orientaon sheet.

I ordered a set of Hastings piston rings through Dennis Kirk one of your distributor's D-K'sPart #: H13001, I
contacted them as there were no recommendations or specs ie ring gaps or ring Gap orientation (Alignment)
"Usually found folded up and inside with the ring bags" throughout 41 years as a machinist I have
recommended and used Hastings rings everytime I rebuild an older Harley because l like the way Hastings
rings respond during the seating "break-in phase" of the motorcycles I've rebuilt as long as my break-in
instructions are followed but I've never had the opportunity to do an Evo 80" Big Twin till now.. the Hastings

set ordered that came without info are the 6164 Standard 2-piston set for a 1990 Harley Davidson Softail EVO
motor - Hastings Piston Ring Set for a 3.498 in. Bore 6164-STD I have learned to go by the manufacturers
settings NOT Harley Davidsons when it comes to piston rings. If you could provide me with the min-max ring
gaps for the 2 comp and 2 oil rings and the proper clocking position for the gaps after their on the pistons I
would greatly appreciate it and can put those references in my ring order book for future reference. Thank you
for your help in this matter.
~D Carpenter

PS if it's easier for you this info could be texted to me at 218-277-9409

Thanks again
