IV. Rationale
Mental health is a growing concern among the youth in the Philippines, with increasing
cases of anxiety, depression, and other psychological challenges. According to the 2021
Young Adult Fertility and Sexuality Study (YAFS5) conducted by the University of the
Philippines Population Institute (UPPI), 17% of Filipino youth aged 15-24 have
experienced suicidal thoughts, and 7% have attempted suicide. Furthermore, data from
the Department of Health (DOH) reveal that one in five Filipino youth suffers from a
mental health condition, emphasizing the urgent need for awareness and intervention.
Recognizing this critical issue, the Philippine government has enacted laws and policies
to support mental health initiatives. The Mental Health Act (Republic Act No. 11036),
signed into law in 2018, ensures accessible and affordable mental health services while
promoting awareness and destigmatization of mental health issues. Additionally, the
Safe Spaces Act (Republic Act No. 11313) and the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013 (Republic
Act No. 10627) provide protective measures against bullying and harassment, which are
significant contributors to youth mental health struggles.
In response to these pressing concerns, "Mind Matters: A Seminar on Empowering Youth
for Stronger Mental Health" aims to foster awareness, resilience, and proactive
intervention strategies among students and educators. By engaging Social Work
students, faculty members, and the training team of Holy Cross of Davao College, this
seminar seeks to equip future social workers and educators with the necessary
knowledge and skills to support youth mental health effectively.
Through expert discussions, interactive activities, and shared experiences, this seminar
will provide a platform to break the stigma surrounding mental health, encourage help-
seeking behaviors, and strengthen the commitment to creating a supportive
environment for young individuals. Ultimately, this initiative aligns with national mental
health policies and contributes to the broader advocacy of building a mentally healthy
society.
V. Objectives
