Data Communication Lecture2

The lecture discusses data transmission modes, including simplex, half duplex, and full duplex, which define the direction of signal flow between devices. It also covers types of data transmission, such as serial and parallel, highlighting their applications and characteristics. Additionally, the lecture outlines transmission media, distinguishing between guided (wired) and unguided (wireless) methods.

Lecture 2: Data Transmission Modes & Types of Communication

This lecture covers the different transmission modes and types of data communication.

1. Data Transmission Modes:

Transmission mode refers to the direction of signal flow between two connected devices. There are
three main types:

a. Simplex Mode:

- Data flows in one direction only.

- One device is always the sender, and the other is always the receiver.
- Example: Keyboard to computer, radio broadcasting.

b. Half Duplex Mode:

- Data flows in both directions, but only one direction at a time.

- Devices take turns to send or receive data.
- Example: Walkie-talkies.

c. Full Duplex Mode:

- Data flows in both directions simultaneously.

- Increases efficiency.
- Example: Telephone communication.

2. Types of Data Transmission:

a. Serial Transmission:

- Data is sent bit by bit, one after another, over a single channel.
- Suitable for long-distance communication.
- Slower but cost-effective.
- Example: USB, RS-232.

b. Parallel Transmission:

- Multiple bits are sent simultaneously using multiple channels (wires).

- Used for short-distance high-speed communication.
- Example: Data transfer between CPU and RAM.
3. Transmission Media:

a. Guided Media (Wired):

- Data is transmitted through physical cables.

- Examples:
- Twisted Pair Cable
- Coaxial Cable
- Fiber Optic Cable

b. Unguided Media (Wireless):

- Data is transmitted through air using electromagnetic waves.

- Examples:
- Radio Waves
- Microwaves
- Infrared
