According to 2011 Census, literacy rate of hundred percent or around has been
achieved by only a couple of states in India. Illiteracy is found mostly among the old
and the deprived sections of society. The youth has a major role to play in eradicating
illiteracy. Write an article to be published in the School Magazine in about 100-120
words on the Role of youth in eradicating poverty. You are Karuna / Karan the Head
Girl/ Head Boy of Cuttack International School.
ROLE OF YOUTH IN ERADICATING ILLITERACY
Illiteracy is one of the biggest problems that the country is facing today. The
youth including the students play a very important role in removing illiteracy as
they are the future of the country.
There are many ways through which the students can help in eradicating this
menace. During their vacations the students can devote couple of hours to teach
the illiterate adults and children in their locality and in the villages. They can
educate them in life skills, proper hygiene, child care and nutrition. Educating
them also refers to helping them overcome the social evils, blind faiths and
gender stereotypes like, superstitions, communalism and narrow mindedness.
The youth must take active part in staging street plays that reveal the hollowness
f the various beliefs of the illiterate mass.

The government can also be taken into confidence and urged to initiate schemes
that would help them to gain education, thereby reducing the rate of school drop
outs.
The youth being the future of the country, must take initiative and spread the
awareness in the society. They are young, energetic and full of new ideas, if they
decide to fight this problem; the country will be able to eradicated illiteracy
completely.

Ragging has raised its ugly head once again. A recent incident at a prestigious school
has shown that this evil has not yet come to an end. Write an article to be published in
the newspaper in about 150 –200 words, on ‘Ragging an Evil’. You are Navita Sinha.
RAGGING AN EVIL
-By Navita Sinha
The word ‘Ragging’ conjures up visions of horror in the hearts of many prospective
boarders of college/ school or hostel. In fact, it is a source of psychological trauma for
freshers. So many tales of torture and humiliation have become associated with the
practice of ‘ragging’ that it is virtually impossible to look at this practice from any angle
other than that of disapproval. Recent incident at a reputed English medium school has
made it compulsory to discuss the evils of ragging.
Ragging means perpetrating insult, humiliation and torture upon the freshers by the
seniors. Ragging has not always been the nightmare as it has now become. It had begun
as a medium of introduction of the seniors with their juniors. Traditions and discipline
were reinforced upon juniors by seniors. They acted as a perfect substitute for teachers.
But now seniors misuse their authority in the name of ragging. The recent death of the
Class XI student is a proof of that. Living in the hostel the boy felt lonely and was afraid
of his seniors. Unable to deal with the peer pressure he decided to end his life. He was
very good in academics. The country lost one of its bright young talents. He is not the
only victim, there are others who are falling prey to this menace.

Attempts of many educationists to tamper ragging with affectionate banter and repartee
have not met with any notable success. It has become a synonym for torture. It must be,
ended. Ragging should be banned in campuses. Stringent laws and punishment should
be enforced upon the guilty. Strict actions should be taken against them. There should be
more awareness among all regarding the issue.
