Mount Merapi (2010)
Mount Merapi is an active stratovolcano located south-east Asia on the island of
Java in Indonesia, it erupted on the 25th of October 2010 and last until November
30th, Merapi is located on one of the most populated parts of Java with over
11,000 people living on the slopes of the mountain. The first indication of the
eruption was in March 2010 where the tiltmeters showed that the volcanic dome
had begun to bulge.
Causes
The
eruption was caused by the Indo-Australian
plates being subducted beneath the Eurasian
plate; the volcano is on top of a destructive plate margin at a subduction zone a
part of the pacific ring of fire, this caused the magma to rise and erupt when
pressure within the Earth's crust built sufficiently.
Impacts
This killed 341 people and 577 people were injured, destroyed more than
2,000 homes, forced evacuation of nearly 350,000 people, and closed

airports and cancelled hundreds of international flights to and from
Indonesia.
Heavy rains on 4th of November 2010
caused lahars, washing ash and rock
down into towns and bridges.
It was caused by rain remobilizing
pyroclastic flows deposits. Main
roads were blocked, and schools
and airports were closed, disrupting
local economies and education.
Houses and livestock were
destroyed during the eruption
causing many animals to die
and people had nowhere to
stay.
Villages such as Bronggang where 15 kilometers away from the
volcano, were buried under 30 centimeters of ash.
Long term Impacts
The hazard map will include new data on exclusion zones around Merapi
expanding to a 20 km radius to ensure safety.

Over 2,500 residents were relocated into new permeant houses as a part of
disaster recovery efforts.
New infrastructures such as dams were built to stop lahars in future events
like this.
Ash will eventually lead to more fertile soil in the area, that allows farmers
to grow and sell crops in long term effect.
Farmers were assisted financially by replacing livestock and crops lost in the
eruption.
Response and aid
Aid was offered from governments and non-governmental organizations
such as the Red Cross and Red Crescent to help with food, clothes, etc...
Indonesian Disaster Management Agency mobilized volunteers, the military
and police to circulate information, rescue survivors, control traffic, set up
temporary hospitals and kitchens in evacuation centers.
210 evacuation centers were set up in schools, churches, stadiums and
government offices.
