Tape Head

The document provides installation instructions for a Hall Effect 7 Channel Tape Head, detailing the proper placement of a magnetic stainless steel tape and detector head for optimal operation. It explains the functionality of each channel, including the use of magnetized rubber strips and optional channel 7 for hydraulic lift systems. The unit can operate on 240v, 110v AC, or 12v DC supply, and includes safety measures for securing magnets and wiring connections.

HALL EFFECT 7 CHANNEL TAPE HEAD

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
A three-inch magnetic stainless steel tape is fixed from the bottom of the shaft close to the side of the car.
The tape MUST be plumb in relation to the car guides and the fixing brackets are usually suspended from
the guides.

The detector head is then fixed to the car top so that the tape guides are clamped around the tape ensuring
that the jaws are free to move and do not deflect the tape.

Magnetised rubber strips are then placed vertically on the tape in the appropriate positions.
It will be found that channels 1, 3, & 5 will react to the magnet face with the Red dot and channel 2, 4, 6 & 7
will react to the magnetic face with the Green dot. Looking at the tape from the rear of the unit, the magnet
must be placed to the left-hand side with the red dot facing outwards to operate channel 1.
Channel 2 is directly alongside channel 1, but will only react to its own magnet (Green dot).
The same applies to channels 3 to 6. In this way, up to six channels can be used using a standard 3” wide
stainless steel tape.

An additional channel 7 (optional) has been provided mainly for re-levelling up & down on Hydraulic Lift
Systems. This is mounted above channel 6 and operates in the same plain and polarity as channel 6.
An additional relay (HW) is provided for Hand Winding purposes. This relay will energise whenever channels
1 or 4 are operated.

Once the magnets have been correctly sited they must be fixed.
NOTE!! FAILURE TO DO SO COULD RESULT IN THE MAGNETS BEING ACCIDENTALLY DISLODGED
AT A FUTURE DATE! Various methods can be employed but we suggest that using a tube of cyanoacrylate
adhesive (enclosed with kit) each magnet is stuck with a dab of glue top & bottom to ensure a good fixing.

The unit operates from either a 240v or 110v AC supply. This is obtained by the two jumper plugs located
next to the transformer on the tape head P.C.B. with one jumper positioned in the centre the unit will run on
240v AC. With two jumpers positioned at opposite ends the unit will run on 100v AC. (as follows)

240VAC 110VAC

0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

It will also operate from a 12v DC supply should there be a power failure. Each unit comes with its own fuse
rated 500 ma. Each channel relay has one set of changeover contacts and the incoming wiring is terminated
at printed circuit board connectors, which are clearly marked. A 20mm hole is provided at the rear of the unit
for conduit entry.

The unit is supplied in a purpose made steel enclosure, which is finished, in a protective blue paint. The lid is
a toughened plastic, which enables the engineer to view the unit in operation without disturbing it.
