Slab Load Test Procedure - 2

The document outlines the process and rationale for conducting slab load tests to assess the load capacity and structural integrity of flexural members in accordance with IS 456-2000. It highlights the importance of verifying construction quality and determining if the existing load-bearing capacity is sufficient for intended use. The testing involves applying loads to the structure and measuring deflection and recovery, with specific precautions to ensure accurate results.

SLAB LOAD TEST

2.1 Load capacity analysis:
Load capacity analysis tests are carried out in accordance with approved methods (Clause 17.6 IS 456-2000).
To determine the load that can safely operate on existing flexural members, load tests have been carried out to
physically test the flexural members and check their deflection limits. The observed data is compared to the
theoretical value. This type of test can demonstrate whether the present load-carrying capacity is adequate to
bear the required live load over the flexural members or not.
2.2 Typical reasons why there is a requirement for the load test:
• We have doubts about the quality of construction or some deficiencies/damages that might have
occurred.
• Confirm the load-bearing capacity of the flexural members.
2.3 SCOPE
To check the structural integrity and load-carrying capacity of the structure, a load test was carried out on the
slab. Questionable RCC slabs needed a structural evaluation to determine if a carrying capacity upgrade is
needed for their specific use or for accommodating higher loads or required design loads. The total deflection
and percentage recovery were analyzed. Furthermore, the questionable member’s vertical deflections are
compared with the deflection limit value of 40l 2/d mentioned in IS 456-2000 clause 17.6.3. if the maximum
observed deflection is less than this value, then recovery measures shall not apply.
In general, Load Testing refers to “In-situ Load testing,” which is a non-destructive test to demonstrate structural
adequacy. It involves applying test loads to the actual structure in question and measuring its various responses,
including deflection, recovery of deflection, and crack widths.
2.4 REFERENCES
The following IS codes are referred to during the slab load test to apply load and check the deflection limits and
recovery percentage.
• IS 456: 2000
• IS 875:1987
2.5 PRECAUTIONS
• Need to check all the possible failure modes, especially shear.
• Isolate the member to be tested from other structural and/or non-structural members so that the test load
is carried entirely by the member in question
• Loads must be applied over a specific structure area to ensure that the member in question carries the
required load.
