Trustworthiness of Data: Validity and Reliability

• Triangulation is the practice of relying on more than one source of

data by using multiple methods or obtaining varied perspectives.
(Efron, 2013).

• Any efforts by the researcher to address the issues of validity and reliability.

• The use of multiple data sources to address each of your research questions.

• Provide a succinct summary of how you will ensure that the data collected will satisfy the
trustworthiness criteria (validity/reliability). Describe steps to be taken to test the data
collection methods (interviews, questionnaires, test, observation etc.) and the steps to be
taken to correct any errors or ambiguous items, before the study.
• Read how to triangulate for the quantitative aspects of your study & How to triangulate
for the Qualitative aspects of your study.
• Hint: Check which of your Research Questions is Quantitative and which is qualitative.
e.g. Choose a small percentage of your population (these should not be in your sample-
Pilot study).
