42
Create a swept surface on the other side, using Profile 2
Create an Extrude surface, using the Spline.3 as profile, direction Y Axis, length = 25mm.
Create a Revolve surface using the Line.1 as axis and the Spline.1 as profile
Perform Operations
Trim the Sweep.1 with the Revolute.1
43
Trim the Trim.1 with the Extrude.1, generate Trim.2
Trim the Trim.2 with the Sweep.2, generate Trim.3
Trim the Trim.3 with the Sweep.3, generate Trim.4
Symmetry the Trim.4 (last trim) using the ZX plane as reference.
44
Join the Symmetry.1 with the Trim.4, create one element.
Create Basic Geometry
Extract the elements that will be necessary to complete the wireframe geometry
45
Create a Parallel Curve

o Support = Extract.1
o Distance = 2.0mm
Create a Connect Curve
46
Project the Connect.1 to Extract.1 (the support surface), and hide the Connect.1
Create a Corner between Paralle.2 and Project.1
o Radius = 3mm
o Support = Extract.1
o Trim both elements
Keep Corner.1, hide all other elements
Create two points that will be used to create the sweep sections
47
Create an Adaptive Sweep using the Corner.1 as guide curve
Create the following sketch
Exit the Sketcher workbench, back to Adaptive Sweep definition dialog box, create other
three sections.
48
Change parameters of section 3 and 4
Finished adaptive sweep surface
Create the symmetrical surface of the adaptive sweep along the zx plane

Exercise 72
4 Bar Linkage
Here we will model a 4 bar linkage. The technical drawing is shown in Figure with unit in inch. Create
each part separately and assemble them as shown in Figure by
-
Manager for e
Before beginning the simulation, we will set the links to a precise orientation. This will allow us to
compare our results to hand calculations more easily. Add a perpendicular mate between the two
faces shown here. Expand the Mates group of the Feature Manager, and right-click on the
perpendicular mate just added. Select Suppress.
Alignment
The perpendicular mate aligns the bar 2 at a precise location. Suppressing the perpendicular mate
allows us to rotation bar 2 freely and un surprising it would align it again.
70
Motor
Activate Solidworks Motion in add-in. Select the Motor icon. In the Property Manager, set the
velocity to 60 rpm. Click on the front face of the bar 2 to apply the motor, and click the check mark.
A one-second simulation will include one full revolution of bar 2 due to 60 rpm.
Time setting
Click and drag the simulation key from the default five seconds to one second (0:00:01).
71
Frame rate
Click the Motion Study Properties Tool. Set the number of frames to 100 (frames per second), and
click the check mark. This setting will produce a smooth simulation. Press the Calculator icon to run
the simulation.
Results and plots
Displacement
Click the Results and Plots Tools. In the Property Manager, set the type of the result to
Displacement/ Velocity/Acceleration: Trace Path. Click on the edge of the top hole of the bar 4.
72
Force and Torque
Select Results and Plots. In the Property Manager, specify Forces: Applied Torque: Z Component.
Click on the Rotary Motor in the Motion Manager to select it, and click the check mark in the
Property Manager.
Exporting data
Right-click in the graph and choose Export CSV. Save the file to a convenient location, and open it in
Excel.
Summary
In this example, we simulate the motion of 4 bar linkage with respective to each other. This tutorial
shows the following key figures of Motion Simulation in SolidWorks.
1. Applying motors to simulate the movement.
2. Setting the time flow and frame rate.
3. Getting the results and plots and exporting the data.
