READING ( 20 marks)
A. Read the passage and answer the questions that follow: ( 8 marks)
Every evening, some part of The Great Britain hears the chimes of the Big Ben, largest of the bells
in the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster. The bell is popularly called the Big Ben, and it is
this bell which chimes out at each quarter of an hour to the people of London. For Britons at sea
or living in distant lands, the sound of Big Ben is still a link with home, for the chimes are
broadcast each evening by the British Broadcasting Corporation. Big Ben has been chiming now
for more than one-and -a-half centuries. It started chiming on 31 May, 1859.
Big Ben is 9 feet in diameter, 7 feet 6 inches tall, and the thickness where the hammer strikes is
8.75 inches. The clock that regulates the chiming of Big Ben keeps good time. In 1939, The Royal
Astronomer made a 290-day check on the performance of the clock. He found that during this
test, the margin of error was very less. However, there was an unexpected lapse on 12 August
1949, and anxiety swept through the Ministry of Works. On that dark day, the clock was five
minutes slow. Actually, a flock of starlings (a kind of bird) had perched on the minute hand.
On 21 August 2017, a four-year schedule of renovation works began on the tower. Modifications
will include adding a lift, re-glazing and repainting the clock dials, upgrading lighting and repairing
roof tiles among other improvements. With a few exceptions, such as New Year's Eve and
Remembrance Sunday, the bells are to be silent until the work is completed in 2022.

It happened a long, long time ago. Children lived in caves with their parents. As for
animals, there were only reptiles. Every month the reptiles of Pambupatti had a big meeting.
The president of these meetings was Makara, the biggest crocodile of the forest. Since it
was the strongest, every reptile agreed with what he said.
Now, one day Makara sent a letter to tortoises. He asked them not to come to the next
meeting. A tortoise named Ahistay was very angry at it. Yet, none of the tortoises had the
courage to attend the meeting. Before the meeting Makara polished his teeth red so that they
sparkled. At the meeting, he said that the forest didn’t need tortoises. When some reptile
tried to show his disagreement, Makara shouted to silence him. He said that the tortoises
were stupid and slow. They are stupid enough to carry their houses on their back. Then he
announced that he had given tortoises one week to leave the forest. So the tortoises had to
go. At first, all the animals were sad. But soon thereafter, they were happy because there
was now more food, more water and more space for them. After a few days, Makara
expelled the snakes.
While the animals were happy because they had now no fear of snakebite. A few days
passed and the animals found that there were too many rats around them as there were no
snakes to eat them up. The rats ate up the eggs of lizards and crocodiles. They chewed up
even Makara’s own nest of eggs.

Are fed by peaceful harvest, by war’s long winter starv’d
Their hands are ours, and in their lines, we read
A labour not different from our own.
Remember they have eyes like ours that wake
Or sleep, and strength that can be won
By love. In every land is the common life
That all ca

Let us remember, whenever we are told
To hate our brothers, it is ourselves
That we shall dispossess, betray, condemn.
