Class 10 Science – Worksheet

Chapter: Light – Reflection and Refraction

Section A – Objective Type Questions (1 mark each)

1. The image formed by a plane mirror is:
a) Real and inverted
b) Virtual and inverted
c) Real and erect
d) Virtual and erect
2. A concave mirror is used in:
a) Torch
b) Rear-view mirror
c) Solar cooker
d) Both a and c
3. The unit of focal length is:
a) Dioptre
b) Metre
c) Radian
d) Newton
4. What is the sign convention for the object distance in front of a concave mirror?

Section B – Very Short Answer Questions (2 marks each)

5. Define the principal focus of a concave mirror.
6. State the laws of reflection of light.
7. What is meant by refraction of light?

Section C – Short Answer Questions (3 marks each)

8. Draw a ray diagram to show the formation of an image by a convex mirror.
9. A pencil partly immersed in water appears bent at the surface. Why does this
happen?
10. An object is placed at a distance of 10 cm from a concave mirror of focal length
15 cm. Find the position and nature of the image.

Section D – Long Answer Questions (5 marks each)

11. a) Derive the mirror formula:
1/f = 1/v + 1/u
b) An object 4 cm high is placed at a distance of 20 cm from a concave mirror
which produces a real image 10 cm in front of it. Find the height of the image.
12. a) Define refractive index.
b) A light ray enters from air into glass having refractive index 1.5. Calculate the
speed of light in glass. (Speed of light in air = 3 × 10⁸ m/s)
c) State two applications of refraction in daily life.

Section E – Case-Based Question (4 marks)

13. Case Study:
A student places a candle in front of a concave mirror and moves it closer. Initially,
the image is real and inverted, but as the candle comes very close, the image
becomes virtual and erect.

Based on this, answer the following:

a) At what position is the candle placed when the image becomes virtual and erect?
b) What is the nature of the image when the object is placed at the centre of
curvature?
c) Draw a ray diagram for the case when the object is at infinity.
d) How can the focal length of a concave mirror be experimentally determined?
