Hearing Voices Stimuli

Experiencing the simulation of hearing voices provided an intense insight into the
struggles faced by those that suffer with schizophrenia. I was listening to the audio in the
background as I cleaned my kitchen and immediately, I felt distracted because I was uncertain of
what I was hearing over the music. The moment that I heard what I thought were voices speaking
in the background, I paused to focus, to make certain that I was in fact hearing voices separate
from the music. The voices were intrusive and unrelenting, making it difficult to focus on my
one task that I set for myself for that evening. This simulation made me realize how exhausting
and distressing it must be to live with schizophrenia simply because I was unable to just isolate
one voice and ignore the others.
After reviewing this simulation, a person who hears voices is impacted in the way that
they operate relationship and how they can operate with daily tasks. Their interactions likely may
become strained due to difficulty concentrating on conversations and an increased sense of
paranoia. Hearing the constant internal noise made me at first believe that I misunderstood what I
was hearing. This caused me to pause what I was doing to hear clearly, which made me realize
that people who suffer in this way find themselves doing this at the most inopportune moments
in public. I realized immediately that I couldn’t possible complete activities such as reading or
listening to navigation instructions because I’d lack focus. I imagine that as a result, I would be
overwhelmed, and it would impact on my performance professionally as well as impacting my
personal relationships.
This experience has enhanced my ability to empathize with patients who have
schizophrenia or hear voices. Before entering nursing school, I had no real understanding of how
this condition impacts a person or what their true experience is like. I now understand the
emotional burden they carry. I will approach patients with non-judgment, compassion, and
ensure they feel heard and supported. This understanding will allow me to provide more effective
care, maintaining a calm environment, and validating their experiences.
Recovery and patient-centered language are essential in caring for individuals with all
mental health disorders. Recovery would entail achieving a satisfying life irrespective of the
disorder. Using supportive provides a sense of self-worth in patients. Instead of defining
individuals by their diagnosis, healthcare providers need to emphasize their strengths and
potential for improvement. Encouraging autonomy and involving patients in their treatment
decisions can enhance their sense of control and motivation in managing their condition.
