ASSIGNMENT 2 – PERSONAL JOURNEY AND
REFLECTION
PURPOSE
1. The purpose of Assignment 2 – Personal Journey and Reflection is to
introduce students to the idea that understanding our personal experiences
and perspectives can help us better understand the vast variety of patients
we will encounter in healthcare.
2. The tools used in self-reflection, behavioural analysis, and interpersonal
communication, can help students develop a sense of self-awareness which
can benefit patient communication
3. Students will use the concepts of communication and understanding of
patient experiences in a case-base study

ASSIGNMENT OBJECTIVES
1. Describe and understand the concepts of personal pain journey and
healthcare support
2. Understand how social supports and support systems can impact personal
and patient experiences of pain
3. Understand and learn professional roles and responsibilities in patient
communication in regard to case-based scenarios
4. Explore our personal environments in terms of comfort and need and use
that learning to empathize with the individuality and personal needs of our
patients

1. Please read the entire assignment prior to beginning
2. Your task for this assignment is to read the following sections and answer
the corresponding questions below.
3. You may use your textbook and valid online resources to assist you in
understanding professionalism, communication, and individuality in terms
of patient care
4. The mark for each question is indicated in the parenthesis next to
each question

Part A: Personal Reflection


1. (6 marks) Personal experiences and your journey
a. What experiences have you had with pain? Accident? Illness?
Childbirth? Surgery?
Answer :My experience was in 2022 when I gave birth to my daughter.
b. How long did your pain last? What type of pain was it? Chronic? Acute?
Answer: My labour pain lasted for 8 hours and it was a chronic pain .
C. How would you rate the pain on a scale of 1 to 10?
Answer: 10
c. How did your family, friends, and others respond to your pain? How did
you feel about their responses?

Answer: My husband was with me the entire time and took care of me the
whole time .
d. How did you deal with the pain? What measures did you use to relieve
the pain?
Answer : I asked the nurse to give me epidural because it was going out of
control and I was just 5 cm dilated .
e. How will this discussion about personal experience with pain affect
your approach to a person who has pain?
Answer :If the person who has pain I would recommend them to stay calm
because of this pain people can have more heart rate and high blood
pressure which can harm the baby as well .

Part B: Patient Communication and Carewalkin===


2. Use the following situation to explore your responsibilities and
communication strategies when caring for a person who is being transferred
within a facility.
Situation 1: Ms. Beauchemin, 55, had surgery for a knee replacement last week.
She is recovering well but is having trouble going up and down stairs independently.
She needs further exercise before going home because her house has two floors,
and she lives alone. She is being transferred to a rehabilitation unit, and you are
assigned to assist her. Answer the following questions about your responsibility in
transferring a person within a health care facility.
a) (3 marks)
i. What would you say to Ms. Beauchemin when you went to her
room?
Answer : I am assigned as Psw for assisting you in your daily
activities Ms. Beauchemin.
ii. What would you do if she seemed unaware that a transfer was
planned?
Answer: I as a Psw , I will be communicating with her in a calm
way and explain the situation , secondly will give emotional
support and ensure her she is safe and comfortable with me.
iii. Who would be responsible for telling her about the move?
Answer : the hospital or primary care provider needs to disclose
the transfer of the patient to rehab.

i. What would you do to help Ms. Beauchemin prepare for the
move?
Answer : I will assist her in packing the stuff , transferability ,
hold her while moving, light housekeeping.
ii. What would you need to do to make sure that all her belongings
were moved?
Answer:I will ensure by double checking the room and ensure all
her documents and belongings are moved .
iii. What equipment would you need to transport her and her
belongings to the new unit?
Answer: transfer wheel chairs or patient lifts to transport her
and her belongings.
c) (3 marks)
i. When you and Ms. Beauchemin arrive at the rehabilitation unit,
what should you do first?
Answer: I l make sure , Ms. Beauchemin is safe and adapt the
new environment .
ii. What information would you need to give to the receiving
nurse?
Answer: All the documentation and paper work , discharge
papers , any medictions,

i. What other responsibilities would you need to carry out after
your return? (3

Answer: 1: documentation 2:medication reminders

Situation 2: Two weeks have passed since Ms. Beauchemin was transferred to the
rehabilitation unit. When you arrive at work, you are sent to the rehabilitation unit
for the day. You find that you are assigned to assist Ms. Beauchemin, and she is
being discharged today. Answer these questions about your responsibilities in
discharging a person from a health care facility.

i. What information should you check before going to Ms.
Beauchemin’s room? (3 things)
Answer I will check my client’s medical records, their
diagnosis.
ii. Where would you find this information?
Answer : the information can be found with on charge nurse or
reception staff in their medical records.

i. How would you make sure that you had gathered all of Ms.
Beauchemin’s clothing and belongings?
Answer: the Nurse staff on charge should make documentation
of the stuff of clients record like clothes , jewellery , personal
belonging before and after the admission.
ii. What should you have Ms. Beauchemin do in order to document
that all of her belongings have been returned to her?
Answer: Ms. Beauchemin should check the documents and
forms which ar signed by her family and all the items in checklist
should be returned back to client
c) (3 marks) When you leave the unit with Ms. Beauchemin, where would
you take her for discharge?( 3 areas)
Answer : I will take the client to the reception desk of the
rehabilitation centre to get the papers and documentation sign
and nurse consent to discharge her from center.
d) (3 marks)
i. What would you report to the nurse when you return to the unit?
Answer : I will report that the client is discharged and have
been advised of regular follow ups with the doctor or physician .
ii. What other responsibilities would you have to carry out after her
discharge?(3 things)
Answer :responsibilities after her discharge : 1: update medical
records of Ms Beauchemin 2 :clean and prepare room for new
patient.,3,update with nurse about the room and discharge of
last client.

Part C: Personal Comfort and Individuality


3. Check the temperature in your home. Different people are comfortable at
different temperatures. Answer these questions about yourself to help you
understand the importance of individual preferences for people in a health
care setting.
a. (1 marks) Do you prefer hot or cold rooms? Why?
Answer I like cold environment so I like cold room. Between
21-23 degree celcius
b. (1 marks) How does the temperature that you prefer compare with
that of your spouse, children, parents, or friends?
Answer my spouse adjust with me when its time to sleep
because I cannot sleep without fan , I feel hot in the middle of night
and they also like same temperature to be maintained.

c. (1 marks) Would the temperature you prefer be appropriate for an


infant? An older adult? Why or why not?
Answer the cold temperature is not appropriate for infants and
older adults because their bodies may tend to have normal

temperature between 24-26 degree Celsius. they will feel cold
according to their age .

d. (1 marks) How does noise in your home affect you? Answer these
questions to help you understand the importance of noise levels in the
health care facility.
Answer : extreme noise by my daughter when she scream
makes me little tired .noise level in health care facility should
be optimum , talking loudly and screaming at someone can
affect mental statement of clients hence , disturb them.
e. (1 marks) How do you study best? With the radio or TV on? With
silence?
Answer: I study best with silence , I can understand concepts
more clearly when I m alone and its silence all around.
f. (1 marks) When you go to bed, do you prefer silence to help you to
sleep? Do you like the sound of soft music or the TV as you go to
sleep?
Answer: At first, I like to read story book for my daughter and
then we both sleep in silence.
g. (1 marks) Does everyone in your household agree on what volume to
keep the radio or TV? How do you resolve conflict over this if it is a
problem?
Answer: In my house the volume of tv depends on the type of
show or serial we are watching .we generally keep volume slow
due to our daughter, because when she sleeps then only we
like to watch Tv.
h. (1 marks) If the noise level in your surroundings is unacceptable to
you, how do you react? How does it affect your ability to think? Rest?
Study? How does it affect your relationship with others?
Answer : sometimes on weekends when there are parties at my
neighbour’s house , they turn on their sound system very
loudly , my daughter could not sleep on time and it affects our
sleep cycle too in result getting up late the next day. relations
do affect when we complain them about these unacceptable
noise which makes our next day less productive.
