I. Vocabulary
1. Fainted – lost consciousness
2. Seized – took by force
3. Faithful – loyal and true
4. Swore – promised, vowed

II. Give one word for the following


1. a group of people chosen to make rules or to give advice – Council
2. a person who lives alone and leads a simple life – Hermit
3. a tool with a sharp- edged used for digging – Spade

III. Frame a sentence


Seized – The police seized the stolen goods during the raid.

IV. Read the extract and answer the questions given below
“Now If I live, I will serve you as your most faithful servant and will
order my sons to do the same. Forgive me!”

a. Who is the speaker of the above lines?


The speaker was an injured bearded man whom the king had helped.
The king had saved his life.
b. Who was he speaking to?
He was speaking to the king.
c. Why was he making such a promise?
He felt greatly indebted to the king. In order to repay the king’s
goodness, he was making that promise.

V. Answer the following questions


1. Did the wise men win the reward? If not, why not?
No, none of the wisemen won the reward. That is because all of
them came up with different answers and the king was not satisfied
with any of those answers.
2. Why was the king advised to go to magicians?
Some of the wise men thought that to decide the right time to do
something, one must look into the future and only magicians were able to
do that. So, they advised the king to go to the magicians.

3. How did the king and the hermit help the wounded man?
The king washed the wound and covered the wound of the man with his
handkerchief and kept on dressing it until the bleeding stopped completely.
The king also offered the wounded man water to drink. The hermit helped
the king to bring the wounded man inside his hut and allowed the man to
spend his night in the hut.

4. The king forgave the bearded man. What did he do to show his
forgiveness?
The king showed his forgiveness by promising the man that he will send
his doctor and servants to look after him and also promised to return
him all his property.

5. Why the king changed his clothes and left behind his bodyguards and
horse before meeting the hermit?

The king was aware that the hermit would meet only simple people.
So, he dressed up like an ordinary man, left behind his horse and
bodyguards and went to meet the hermit in his hut in the woods all
alone.
