Cee5311 Dams

The document outlines an assignment for a course on Water Management and Hydraulic Structures at the University of Zambia, focusing on the stability analysis of two proposed dam designs. The first dam is 43 m high with specific material properties and requires a stability check for seepage, while the second dam is 33 m high and involves calculating seepage rates and stability under similar conditions. The assignment is due on 9 May 2025.

CE 5311- Water Management and Hydraulic Structures
Assignment 4 - Dams
17 April 2025

1. A dam 43 m high is to be constructed from a silt which, when compacted

at optimum moisture, has a specific weight  = 17.5 kN/m2, cohesion c =
26 kN/m2, angle of internal friction  = 25°, and a coefficient of
permeability = 0.14 m/day. A cross section of the proposed design and
data on the foundation material are shown below. Check this proposal for
embankment stability for steady state seepage with failure arc of radius
40 m whose centre is at O as shown below. Values for some parameters
have already been measured and are given in the table below. Assume
that the pore pressure in clay is zero since it is difficult to estimate.

2. An earth dam with a homogeneous embankment 33 m high and a top

width of 10 m, side slopes of 1 on 2 rests on an impervious

foundation. It is designed to retain water at a depth of 30 m. The

embankment is a silty material whose properties are: cohesion c = 23

kN/m2, angle of internal friction = 19 o, specific weight = 22 kN/m2 and

hydraulic conductivity = 0.18 m/day.

a) Sketch the flow net and compute the seepage rate. Use the

equation of the parabola to help you draw the seepage line.

b) Check the embankment for stability for steady state seepage with

failure arc of radius 30 m centered at a point 30 m vertically above

the toe of the dam. Use 4 slices which are almost equal.
