Chapter 16 Homework:

4. The speed of a sound wave is determined by the medium through which it travels, not its
frequency. We are comparing two sound waves with different frequencies (220 Hz and 440
Hz) but traveling through the same medium. Since the medium is the same, the bulk
modulus and density will be the same for both waves. The speed of sound for both
waves will be the same, as it is determined by the medium and not the frequency.

8. Light travels faster than sound. This is why we see the lightning flash before we hear the
thunder roar. The time interval between seeing the lightning and hearing the thunder is
essentially the time it takes for the sound to reach us. The closer the thunder, the louder it
sounds. This is because sound intensity.

14. The loudness or intensity of a sound wave is determined by its amplitude. A high
amplitude sound wave results in a louder sound. The loudness or intensity of a sound wave
depends upon its amplitude only.

52. As the tuning fork moves away from you, the frequency you hear would be lower than
400 hertz. This is due to the Doppler effect, where the perceived frequency decreases as the
source of the sound moves away. When two sound waves with the same frequency, phase,
and amplitude arrive at your ear, they will undergo constructive interferenceWhen two sound
waves with the same frequency, phase, and amplitude arrive at your ear, you will hear the
same frequency, but louder.
