THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
This document introduces the Microsoft Dynamics Web client and how to get up to speed quickly.
THE MICROSOFT DYNAMICS WEB CLIENT IN A NUTSHELL
The Microsoft Dynamics Web client enables the rendering of Microsoft Dynamics NAV content
(pages, reports, etc.) in a web browser. Microsoft Dynamics NAV Pages are rendered in the browser
using HTML. On the server, only Internet Information Services is required. For more information
about supported client Web browsers and server OS, see the ”Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013
Requirements” topic in the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Help.
When installing The “Web Server Components” option from the Microsoft Dynamics NAV installer, a
new IIS App Pool with an IIS site are deployed to the server machines. The added App Pool name is
“Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 Web Client Application Pool” and uses the default
“ApplicationPoolIdentity” identity.
The related files are deployed under “[C:]\Program Files\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\70\Web Client”. Of
all these files, only the “web.config” is supposed to the edited by users.
FIRST-TIME INSTALLATION OF THE WEB CLIENT
In order to get up to speed quickly with the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 Web client for evaluation
purposes follow these simple steps:
1. Run the Microsoft Dynamics NAV installer using the Demo Option. This will install the Microsoft
Dynamics NAVWindows client and all the other needed Microsoft Dynamics NAV components in
one box.
2. Open the Microsoft Dynamics Windows client and verify that it works correctly.
3. Run the Microsoft Dynamics NAV installer again. This time, choose the “Add or Remove
Components” option, and then choose to add the Web Server components.
1
4. Accept all the default parameter values and complete the installation. By default, the installer
will adjust the IIS configuration if needed and that might take some time. When completed, in
the Windows Start menu you will be able to find a link to the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Web
client. Open the link to verify that the Microsoft Dynamics Web client has been installed
correctly1.
At this point, your installation of the Microsoft Dynamics Web Client is available for use. If an error
occurs, refer to the Troubleshooting section in the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Help.
OPTIONS FOR INSTALLING THE WEB SERVER COMPONENTS
The Web Server Components require IIS 7 or later to be correctly installed and configured. There is
an option in the Web Server Components to automatically install and configure IIS (“Install IIS
prerequisites”). By selecting “Install” (the default option), the installer will attempt to automatically
install IIS, which installs the required prerequisites.
1
Alternatively, you can open a supported Web browser to the address ”http://localhost:8080” if you
choose to install on the default port number 8080.
2
If the automatic installation fails all changes are rolled back and the user is informed where to
locate the installation logs for more details. In these cases, running the installer again with the
“Detect” option will provide a list of the missing IIS prerequisites (the installer will not attempt any
installation with the “Detect” option). The user can refer to the Microsoft Dynamics NAV product
documentation for information about how to manually to install the listed IIS prerequisites. After all
the prerequisites are correctly installed, running the installer again will complete the installation of
the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Web Server components.
The “Skip” option will not attempt to modify IIS and it is intended for production environments
where administrators need complete control over IIS configuration and prefer to do a manual
configuration instead of running the automatic IIS prerequisites (“Install” option).
The “Add link to Start menu” option will create a Windows shortcut pointing to the Microsoft
Dynamics NAV Web client, in the Start menu.
EXPOSE THE WEB CLIENT ON THE INTERNET
The following high-level steps describe how to expose the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 Web
Server components over the internet. It is strongly recommended that you set up detailed Microsoft
Dynamics NAV security roles for all the users accessing Microsoft Dynamics NAV via web access.
1. Install the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013 Web client. For more information, see the “How to:
Install Microsoft Dynamics NAV Web Client” topic in the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Help.
2. Expose the IIS web site to the internet. This procedure is general to any IIS site.
3. Configure the desired authentication mode for Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2013. For more
information, see the “How to: Set Up User Authentication for the Microsoft Dynamic NAV Web
Client” topic in the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Help.
It is also a good practice to configure the IIS site for https support. For more information, see
the “Securing the Connection to Microsoft Dynamics NAV Web Client With SSL” topic in the in
the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Help.
For more information about how to configure the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Web client, see
“Configuring Microsoft Dynamics NAV Web Client Using the Web.Config File” topic in the Microsoft
Dynamics NAV Help.
