TRAINING SESSION
WHAT EXACTLY IS A MODEL UN?
➤ Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations
where students assume the roles of the delegates of a particular nation and attempt
to solve the real-life world issues, keeping in mind their country’s policies and
perspective.
➤ It helps one increase their con dence, speaking skills, critical thinking skills and so
on.
➤ A person will also learn about diplomacy, international law, the United Nations and
many more!!

ROLL CALL
➤ There are two ways to respond to the roll call-
➤ Present
➤ Present and voting
➤ If you respond with “Present”, you have an option to abstain from voting for the
resolution the committee makes
➤ If you respond with “Present and voting”, you MUST vote for the resolution.

➤ p.s- you can change from “present” to “present and voting”, but not vice versa

➤ Agenda- “The delegate of (country) would like to raise a motion to establish/set the
agenda as (agenda).”
➤ General Speaker's List- “The delegate of (country) would like to raise a motion to
establish the general speaker's list, with individual speaker’s time being (x) seconds.”
➤ Moderated Caucus - “The delegate of (country) would like to raise a motion to move into
a moderated caucus on the topic (topic) for total time being (time) minutes and
individual speaker's time being (time) seconds.”
➤ Unmoderated Caucus- “The delegate of (country) would like to raise a motion to
suspend formal debate and move into an unmoderated caucus for total time being (time)
minutes.”
➤ Adjournment- “The delegate of (country) would like to raise a motion to adjourn the
meeting.”
GENERAL
SPEAKER’S LIST
A motion from the oor will establish a continuously
open General Speakers’ List for the purpose of general
debate on the topic area as de ned by the agenda.
This General Speakers’ List will be followed for all
formal debate on the topic area.
The default speaking time when in the General
Speakers’ List is 90 seconds per delegation.

MODERATED CAUCUS
➤ It can be raised if the delegates want to discuss a speci c topic related to the agenda.
➤ The EB will open the oor for motions and the delegates will be recognized by them.
➤ The delegate must mention that, the formal debate is to be suspended, state the
topic, total time to be allotted and also the individual speaker’s time as well.
➤ The motion will be passed with a simple majority vote, and the delegate, which
raised the motion, will be given a choice to either be the rst speaker or reserve his/
her rights to be the last.

UNMODERATED CAUCUS
➤ The most informal forms of all debates
➤ This can be raised if delegates want to freely discuss regarding the ow of the
committee and talk about what motions are to be raised and also can discuss
regarding the documentation.
➤ During this, the EB won’t have any custody over the delegates.

YIELDS-
➤ A delegate who was granted the permission to speak by the Chairpersons shall have
the right to yield the remaining time, if any to:
➤ To the Dais
➤ To questions/PoIs
➤ To the delegate of XYZ

➤ Side note- While yielding to another delegate, the delegate must take the other
delegate’s consent. If the delegate doesn’t accept the time, the remaining time will
be used by EB by their discretion.
➤ Yields apply ONLY DURING GSLs
RIGHT TO REPLY-
➤ It can raised if a delegate has made a speech, and it threatened your national
sovereignty.
➤ However, it does not apply for any personal remarks or insults.
DRAFT RESOLUTION
➤ Draft Resolution means a document drafted in the o cial format of the resolution.
➤ The ones recognized as the writers of the Draft Resolution are called “Sponsors” and
the ones supporting the discussion are “Signatories”. The minimum no. of sponsors
and signatories will be set by the EB.
➤ A delegate can be a signatory in multiple resolutions but can be a sponsor in only
one resolution.
➤ The EB will stipulate a deadline for the submission of the Draft Resolution, after
which the resolutions won’t be accepted.
➤ More than 1 resolutions can exist in the committee.

MAIN COMPONENTS OF THE RESOLUTION
➤ Preambulatory Clauses- It may state reasons why the committee is working on this
issue and highlight previous international actions on the issue.
➤ Example-
Deeply concerned by the degree of strife in the region and the resulting death,

➤ Operative Clauses- These are the clauses which states the plan of action the
committee is planning to take, regarding the agenda.
➤ Example-
Enforces with military support that Joseph Kabila steps down as president at the e
nd of the year, if necessary;
DISCUSSION OF THE DRAFT RESOLUTION
➤ After submitting, the oor will be open for the discussion of the Draft resolution
➤ A sponsor can raise a motion to discuss the Draft Resolution, and with a simple
majority, it’ll be put forward to vote.
➤ After the sponsors read out the Resolution, the oor will be open for amendments,
where delegates can send in their amendments in the form of a chit in their
respective Whatsapp groups, for either addition, deletion or modi cation of a clause.

TYPES OF AMENDMENTS
➤ Friendly amendment- If the sponsors feel that an amendment given is favourable and
that they are okay with it, it can be deemed as a friendly amendment and it’ll be
directly amended.
➤ Unfriendly amendment- If the sponsors are against the amendment raised, it’ll be
deemed as an unfriendly amendment and it’ll be put to vote, if the majority is
acquired, the amendment will be in e ect.
