Linear Programming

The document outlines a mathematical problem involving a youth association planning a picnic, with constraints on vehicle rentals and costs. It includes tasks such as writing inequalities, graphing, and calculating values based on given data. Additionally, it presents an experiment with variables x and y, requiring the construction of a log table and graphing, as well as calculus problems involving tangents and volumes of revolution.

NAME: ………………………………………. FORM: 5…..

1. The members of a youth association plan to organize a picnic. They agree to rent
x buses and y vans. The rental of a bus is RM 800 and the rental of a van is RM
300. The rental of the vehicles for the picnic is based on the following
constraints;
i. The total number of vehicles to be rented is not more than 8.
ii. The number of buses is at most twice the number of vans.
iii. The maximum allocation for the rental of the vehicles is RM4000.

a) Write three inequalities, other than x 0 and y 0, which satisfy all the above
constraints.
b) Using a scale of 2 cm to 1 vehicle on both axes, construct and shade the region R
which satisfies all of the above constraints.
c) Use the graph constructed in 1(b) to find
i. The minimum number of vans rented if 3 buses are rented,
ii. The maximum number of members that can be accommodated into
the rented vehicles if a bus can accommmodate 48 passengers and
a van can accommodate 12 passengers.

2. Table shows the values of two variables , x and y, obtained from an experiment.
Variables x and y are related by the equation , where h and k are
constants.
x 1.5 3.0 4.5 6.0 7.5 9.0
y 2051 3.24 4.37 5.75 7.76 10.00

a) Based on the above table, construct a table for the values of log y.
b) Plot log y against x, using a scale of 2 cm to 1 unit on the x-axis and 2 cm to 0.1
unit on the log y – axis. Hence, draw the line of best fit.
c) Use the graph in 2 (b) to find the value of
i. x when y = 4.8
ii. h
iii. k
3. Diagram shows the curve and the tangent to the curve at the point
A(1, 6).

y =x 2+ 5

A (1,6)

O x

Calculate
a) the equation of the tangent at A
b) the area of the coloured region
c) the volume of revolution, in terms of , when the region bounded by the curve
and the straight line y = 7 is rotated through 360 about the y – axis.
