Divisibility Rules - Simple Tricks and Examples

Divisibility by 2

If the last digit is even (0, 2, 4, 6, 8), the number is divisible by 2.

Example: 128 ends in 8 - divisible by 2

Divisibility by 3

If the sum of digits is divisible by 3, the number is divisible by 3.

Example: 123 -> 1+2+3=6 - divisible by 3

Divisibility by 4

If the last 2 digits form a number divisible by 4, the number is divisible by 4.

Example: 312 -> last 2 digits = 12 - divisible by 4

Divisibility by 5

If the number ends in 0 or 5, it's divisible by 5.

Example: 275 ends in 5 - divisible by 5

Divisibility by 6

If the number is divisible by both 2 and 3, it's divisible by 6.

Example: 132 is even and 1+3+2=6 - divisible by 6

Divisibility by 7

Double the last digit, subtract it from the rest of the number. If result is divisible by 7, so is the number.

Example: 203 -> 20 - (2x3)=14 - divisible by 7

Divisibility by 8

If the last 3 digits form a number divisible by 8, the number is divisible by 8.

Example: 1096 -> last 3 digits = 096 - divisible by 8

Divisibility Rules - Simple Tricks and Examples

Divisibility by 9

If the sum of digits is divisible by 9, the number is divisible by 9.

Example: 729 -> 7+2+9=18 - divisible by 9

Divisibility by 10

If the number ends in 0, it's divisible by 10.

Example: 370 ends in 0 - divisible by 10

Divisibility by 11

Alternate sum and difference of digits. If the result is divisible by 11, the number is too.

Example: 121 -> 1-2+1=0 - divisible by 11

Divisibility by 12

If a number is divisible by both 3 and 4, it is divisible by 12.

Example: 144 -> 1+4+4=9 (div by 3), last 2 digits = 44 (div by 4)
