1. If you give me 6 of your oranges, I will have as many oranges as you.

But if I give you 6 oranges,

you will have twice as many oranges as I have. Find the number of oranges each of us has.

2. A purse contains coins of Rs.1 and Rs.2. The total number of coins is 40. Find the number of

coins of each kind.

3. Reena has hens and rabbits which together are 40 in number. If she has 5 more rabbits and 5

fewer hens, the number of rabbits would become four times the number of hens. Find the original

number of hens and rabbits.

4. Susan invested a certain amount of money in two schemes A and B, offering 8% and 9% per

annum respectively. She received Rs.1860 as annual interest. However, if she had interchanged the

amounts, she would have received Rs.220 more. Find the amount invested in each scheme.

5. A lending library has a fixed charge for the first five days and an additional charge for each extra

day. Garima paid Rs.21 for keeping a book for 7 days, and Busi paid Rs.17 for keeping a book for 5

days. Find the fixed charge and the charge per extra day.

6. The cost of 4 pens and 4 pencils is Rs.100. Three times the cost of a pen exceeds twice the cost

of a pencil by Rs.25. Form the linear equations and find the cost of each item.

7. A shopkeeper gains Rs.2200 by selling a TV at 5% gain and a fridge at 10% gain. If he sold the

TV at a 5% loss and the fridge at a 5% gain, he gains Rs.1500. Find the cost price of TV and fridge.

8. Vijay had some bananas. He sold the first lot at the rate of Rs.2 for 3 bananas and the second lot

at Rs.2 per banana and collected Rs.400. If he had sold the first lot at Rs.1 per banana and second

lot at Rs.2 for 5 bananas, he would have collected Rs.460. Find the total number of bananas.

9. The sum of the digits of a two-digit number is 8. If the digits are reversed, the new number is 18

more than the original. Find the number.

10. The sum of digits of a two-digit number is 8, and the difference between the number and the

number formed by reversing the digits is 54. Find the number.


11. The sum of a two-digit number and the number obtained by reversing its digits is 110. If 1 is

subtracted from the first number, the new number is 4 more than 5 times the sum of its digits. Find

the first number.

12. The sum of a two-digit number and the number formed by interchanging its digits is 132. If 12 is

added to the number, the new number becomes 5 times the sum of its digits. Find the number.

13. The sum of a two-digit number and the number obtained by reversing its digits is 165. If the

difference of the digits is 3, find the number.

14. A two-digit number is obtained either by multiplying the sum of digits by 8 and adding 1 or by

multiplying the difference of digits by 13 and adding 2. Find the number.

15. Three times the larger of two numbers divided by the smaller gives a quotient of 2 and a

remainder of 3. Also, seven times the smaller number divided by the larger gives a quotient of 3.

Find the numbers.

16. A two-digit number is 8 times the sum of its digits. If 9 is added to the number, the digits

interchange. Find the number.

17. A two-digit number is 3 more than 4 times the sum of its digits. If 6 is subtracted from the

number, the digits are reversed. Find the number.

18. A two-digit number is 4 times the sum of its digits and twice the product of its digits. Find the

number.

19. A two-digit number is such that the product of digits is 12. If 6 is added to the number, the digits

interchange. Find the number.

20. Two numbers are in the ratio 5:6. If 8 is subtracted from each, the ratio becomes 4:5. Find the

numbers.

21. A fraction is such that if the numerator is doubled and denominator is reduced by 8, we get 3.

Also, if numerator is increased by 8 and denominator is doubled, we get 1/3. Find the fraction.
22. The denominator of a fraction is 4 more than twice the numerator. The sum of numerator and

denominator is 91/12. Find the fraction.

23. The sum of numerator and denominator of a fraction is 8 more than twice the numerator. If

numerator and denominator are increased by 3, they become in the ratio 2:3. Find the fraction.

24. If the numerator of a fraction is multiplied by 7 and denominator is reduced by 5, the fraction

25. The sum of numerator and denominator of a fraction is 3 less than twice the denominator. If the

34. Two points A and B are 90 km apart. They start at the same time towards each other and meet

35. A train travels 60 km by train and remaining distance by car. It takes 8 hours if travelling 120 km

by train and the rest by car. It takes 20 minutes longer if he travels less by train. Find the distance

between two places.

36. A boat covers 23 km upstream and 63 km downstream in 6 hours. It covers 40 km upstream and

49 km downstream in 9 hours. Find the speed of the boat and of the stream.

37. A train's speed is reduced to 4/5 of its original speed, consequently it reaches its destination 45

minutes late. Had this reduction happened after covering 18 km more, the train would have reached

9 minutes earlier. Find the original speed of the train and distance of the journey.

38. It takes X three hours more than Y to walk 30 km. If X doubles his pace, he is ahead by 1.5

hours. Find their speeds.

39. A train covered a distance at a uniform speed. If the speed were 6 km/h more, it would have

taken 4 hours less. If the speed were 6 km/h less, it would have taken 6 hours more. Find the

distance.

40. A sailor goes 8 km downstream in 40 minutes and returns upstream in 1 hour. Find the speed of

the sailor and the stream.

41. A man walks a certain distance at a certain speed. If he walks an hour faster, he takes 1 hour

less. But if he walks an hour slower, he takes 3 hours more. Find the distance and the speed.

42. A person rowing at 5 km/h in still water takes three times as long to row 24 km upstream as to

row the same distance downstream. Find the speed of the stream.

43. Meena went to a bank to withdraw Rs.2000. She asked the cashier to give her Rs.50 and
Rs.100 notes. She received 25 notes in total. Find the number of Rs.50 and Rs.100 notes.

44. A railway ticket costs a basic fare and a reservation charge. A first-class ticket from Mumbai to

Ahmedabad costs Rs.216 and a half-reserved ticket costs Rs.121. Find the basic fare and the

reservation charge.

45. The students of a class are made to stand in rows. If 5 students are extra in a row, there would

on the number of people. If the monthly expenditure is Rs.3900 for 4 people and Rs.5700 for 5

people, find the rent and per head expenses.

49. The area of a rectangle is 19 square units. If the length is reduced by 5 units and the breadth

increased by 5 units, the area remains unchanged. If we increase the length by 3 units and breadth

by 2 units, the area increases by 67 square units. Find the length and breadth.

50. A man starts his job with a certain monthly salary and earns a fixed increment every year. His

salary was Rs.1500 after 1 year of service and Rs.1800 after 4 years. Find his starting salary and

annual increment.
