Chapter 1: Rational Numbers

Total Marks: 20

Time: 40 minutes

Instructions:

* All questions are compulsory.

* Marks for each question are indicated against it.

Questions:

* Fill in the blanks: (1 x 4 = 4 marks)

a) The additive inverse of \frac{5}{8} is ______ (Based on Exercise 1.1, Q.

2).

b) ______ is the multiplicative identity for rational numbers (Based on

Example 1).

c) To multiply two rational numbers, we multiply their numerators and

divide by the product of their ______ (Concept from the chapter).

d) The reciprocal of -7 is ______ (Based on Exercise 1.1, Q. 2).

* State whether the following statements are True or False: (1 x 3 = 3 marks)

a) 0 has a reciprocal (Based on Exercise 1.1, Q. 2).

b) The rational number \frac{-p}{q} is always a negative rational number

if p and q are positive integers (Concept from the chapter).

c) There are infinitely many rational numbers between any two given
rational numbers (Based on Example 3).

* Solve the following: (2 x 2 = 4 marks)

a) Find the sum: \frac{-2}{3} + \frac{5}{7} (Similar to Exercise 1.1, Q. 3).

b) Find the product: \frac{-3}{5} \times \frac{-5}{3} (Similar to Exercise

1.1, Q. 3).

* Represent \frac{-2}{5} on the number line. (Based on Example 2, and

concept from the chapter) (3 marks)
* Find three rational numbers between \frac{1}{4} and \frac{1}{2}.
(Similar to Exercise 1.2, Q. 2) (3 marks)

* Verify that x \times (y + z) = x \times y + x \times z for x = \frac{-3}{7}, y

= \frac{2}{5}, z = \frac{-5}{6}. (Similar to Exercise 1.1, Q. 4) (3 marks)

Answer Key (for your reference only):

* a) \frac{-5}{8}

b) 1

c) denominators

d) \frac{-1}{7}

* a) False

b) True

c) True

* a) \frac{-14 + 15}{21} = \frac{1}{21}

b) 1

* (Correct representation on the number line)

* For example: \frac{3}{10}, \frac{7}{20}, \frac{2}{5} (other answers are

possible)

* Left Hand Side (LHS): \frac{-3}{7} \times (\frac{2}{5} + \frac{-5}{6}) = \

frac{-3}{7} \times (\frac{12 - 25}{30}) = \frac{-3}{7} \times \frac{-13}
{30} = \frac{13}{70}

Right Hand Side (RHS): \frac{-3}{7} \times \frac{2}{5} + \frac{-3}{7} \

times \frac{-5}{6} = \frac{-6}{35} + \frac{15}{42} = \frac{-36 + 75}
{210} = \frac{39}{210} = \frac{13}{70}

LHS = RHS (Verified)
