Introduction
system – Introduction
PCS 7 has two different archive types:

Message archive Archive for process values (system archive)

• Messages and alarms are stored here. • Archive tags are stored here.
• You configure this archive in the "Alarm • The system archive is configured in the "Tag
Logging" editor. Logging" editor.
• The time stamping of the archived messages • PCS 7 automatically creates this archive when

• Differentiate between 2 archive types:

acquisition cycle greater than 1 minute.
• The preset value of 1 minute can be changed
manually in the "Tag Logging" editor using the
tag configuration of archive type "TagLogging
Fast".

In PCS 7 a distinction is made between two types of archives, which you configure in
different editors:

 Process value archives with the "Tag Logging" editor
 Message archive for messages and alarms with the "Alarm Logging" editor

Archive for process values

Archive tags are stored in the "System Archive". PCS 7 automatically creates this
archive when you compile the OS with the "Archive tags" option for the first time. The
system archive is configured in the "Tag Logging" editor.
In doing so, a distinction is made between two archive types: TagLogging Slow and
TagLogging Fast:
 The TagLogging Fast archive type is the standard archive type used for an
acquisition cycle less than 1 minute.
 The TagLogging Slow archive type is used for an acquisition cycle greater than 1
minute.
In addition, you can access exported archives in the "Tag Logging" editor with shortcut
menu command "Link archive".
You can also create additional archives for process values in the "Tag Logging" editor.

"Archiving" and "Long-term archiving"

Values are typically archived locally on the various OS servers.
The local archives of the OS servers are configured as short-term archives: When the
archive has reached its capacity, the oldest values are deleted first to make room for the
new values. This corresponds to the "FIFO" principle (first-in first-out).
When an external archive server is not accessible for a certain amount of time, the OS
Archivingserver
systemwill try–toIntroduction
transfer archived data at a later time. This is possible without data loss
as long as the data is still in the short-term archive.

Compression and short-term

archive
The archive values of the TagLogging
Fast and TagLogging Slow (PCS 7
V7.0 and higher) are stored as
compressed values in the database,
but without any loss of quality of the
archive values.

Architecture for the OS long-term archiving

The hardware for long-term archiving requires a

design:
• What is the expected tag and alarm load?
• How long will the data be stored in the Process
Historian?

The following products are offered for OS long-term archiving:

 Process Historian (PCS 7 Version 8.0 and higher)
 Scalable high-performance archiving system
 No restriction with respect to archivable single stations, servers or server pairs
 Single or redundant configuration possible
 The Process Historian can be expanded with a reporting system in the form of the
Information Server.
The Information Server can access the archive data in the Process Historian and in
the operator stations in parallel.
 Access to archives using OPC UA
As an OPC UA client, any applications can read the process values and messages
archived in the database of the Process Historian. A SIMATIC PCS 7 Process
Historian OPC UA Server is required for this on the Process Historian.

 Please take note of the SIMATIC PCS 7 OS Engineering course (ST-PCS7OSE) in

the SITRAIN course portfolio with additional information on long-term archiving in
PCS 7.

 Change in product from CAS to Process Historian

The change from CAS to Process Historian is possible with products from the
SIMATIC PCS 7 V8.0 range.
In the separate catalog section "Previous versions", various conversion packages are
available under "SIMATIC PCS 7 V8.0, Process data archiving and reporting":
The single or redundant Process Historian V8.0 can then be upgraded to current
versions.
The migration wizard of the Process Historian V8.1 supports the migration of CAS
databases of SIMATIC PCS 7 V7.0 and higher.

Archive configuration
To specify the size of the archive for an individual segment and the total size of the
short-term archive, the system always provides two criteria:
 Specification of a time period in hours/days/weeks/months/years
 Physical size in MB or GB
When one of the two criteria is exceeded, a change of segment occurs in the case of an
individual segment or the starting segment of the total short-term archive is overwritten.
The archive configuration includes settings in the following tools:
 Specification of size and storage location (Logging editors in WinCC Explorer)
 Selection of the process values and messages to be archived (SIMATIC Manager)
