Narrative Report: Air Conditioning Service, Repair, and Maintenance at
Princess Sophia Esmabe
Auto Shop
Our group conducted an interview at Princess Sophia Esmabe Auto Shop in Puro
Batia, Libmanan, Camarines Sur, to gather information about air conditioning
service, repair, and maintenance. We arrived at Puro Batia Crossing at
approximately 9:00 AM, proceeded to the shop, and divided into two groups to
interview the mechanic.
While one group conducted the interview, the other observed the shop's
components, focusing on the air conditioning system. This hands-on experience
allowed us to visualize the components we'd been studying—particularly the
condenser, which was easily identifiable. We observed the engine and its related
parts, reinforcing our understanding of their physical location and appearance.
The interview yielded valuable insights into common air conditioning problems
and repair techniques. We asked the following questions:
1. What is the most common air conditioning problem? The mechanic responded
that the most frequent issue is compressor failure, often due to wiring problems
or insufficient refrigerant (freon).
2. What is the most challenging repair? Locating and repairing compressor leaks
presents the greatest challenge. The mechanic explained the difficulty in
pinpointing the leak's source among numerous components (condenser,
compressor pipes, evaporator, etc.). He also highlighted the role of the pressure
switch, which prevents compressor operation under low refrigerant pressure,
and the importance of functioning condenser fans in modern vehicles.
3. What tools/equipment are commonly used? A manifold gauge is essential for
diagnosing refrigerant levels. The mechanic explained its use in checking high
and low-pressure valves to identify refrigerant shortages (normal pressure is
around 120 psi). He emphasized that simply adding refrigerant without checking
for leaks is insufficient and could lead to recurring problems.
Our observation of the shop's components significantly enhanced our
understanding of the air conditioning system’s physical layout and the function
of its parts (evaporator, condenser, accumulator, thermal expansion valve, and
compressor). The interview further clarified the correct use of tools and
equipment, highlighting the importance of safe and proper handling to prevent
accidents and damage. The experience underscored the potential consequences
of improper tool use and the need for careful attention to detail during repairs.
