Advanced PSS®E Training

Renewable Energy Integration in Power Systems with Battery Energy Storage


(BESS)

Duration: 5 Days (Face-to-Face)


Target Audience: Power system planners, renewable energy engineers, utility engineers, consultants,
and technical professionals working on RE grid integration.

Course Overview

This advanced-level training provides a hands-on, practical deep dive into PSS®E software with a
focus on integrating renewable energy sources and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) into
power systems. Covering both steady-state and dynamic studies, the course equips participants with
simulation techniques aligned with modern grid codes and industry practices.

Training Modules – Day-wise Breakdown

Day 1: PSS®E Fundamentals & Grid Component Modelling

Morning Session (FN): PSS®E Software Introduction

• Overview of PSS®E capabilities and features

• Navigating the PSS®E interface

• Understanding the workspace and basic functionalities

• Comparison with ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory

• File types: .sld, .sav, .raw, .seq, .snp, .dyr

• Data import/export

• Basic options configuration

Afternoon Session (AN): Modelling of Grid Components

• Modelling transmission lines and cables

• Transformer modelling (2-winding and 3-winding)

• Busbars and interconnections


Day 2: Source Modelling & Reactive Power Studies

Morning Session (FN): Modelling RE Sources for Steady-State

• Solar PV, Wind Turbine Generators (WTG), and BESS

• Inverter datasheets and control modes

• Reactive power control & capability curves

Afternoon Session (AN): Reactive Power Compensation Study

• Grid code requirements (voltage/reactive support)

• Compensation: lagging, leading, unity power factor

• Grid voltage limits: 0.95–1.05 p.u.

• P-Q and Q-V curve analysis

Day 3: Case Study & Dynamic Modelling

Morning Session (FN): Reactive Power Case Study

• Compensation study for a 300MW plant

• Simulation and reporting

Afternoon Session (AN): Solar & BESS Modelling for Dynamic Studies

• Dynamic modelling of inverters and BESS

• REGCA1, REECA1, REECC1 models

• Introduction to user-defined models

Day 4: Plant & WTG Control Modelling

Morning Session (FN): Plant Power Controller (PPC) Modelling

• REPCA1 (Plant Controller), REPTCA1 (Voltage Control)

• Coordination of plant and inverter controls

Afternoon Session (AN): WTG Modelling

• WTG Types 1 to 4: electrical & mechanical models

• Pitch control, torque, aerodynamics

• Auxiliary models: WTTQA1, WTPTA1, WTARA1, WTDTA1


Day 5: Grid Compliance & Dynamic Performance Studies

Morning Session (FN): Dynamic Performance Analysis

• Grid code compliance

• Low Voltage Ride Through (LVRT)

• High Voltage Ride Through (HVRT)

• Frequency response and power ramping

Afternoon Session (AN): Final Case Study – 300MW Plant

• End-to-end dynamic simulation

• Troubleshooting and report generation
