Piecewise Function
A piece wise functions is a function where more than one formula is used to define the output. Each formula has its own
domain and range. The domain of function is the union of all of these smaller domains.

Writing a Piecewise Function from a Graph
Piecewise Function –Example 2
You go to Wal-Mart to buy some candy. You decide to buy snickers because they have a special deal on snickers. A bag of
snickers costs $3.45, but if you buy 4 or more bags, they only cost $3.00 per bag.
Create a piecewise function to represent the cost of the bag of snickers.
Piecewise Function –Example 3
Mad hatter is ordering cups from teacups, limited for his tea party. The teacups limited catalogue prices cups according to
the number of cups ordered. For orders of 20 or fewer cups, the price is $ 1.40 per cup plus $12 shipping and handling on
the order. For orders of more than 20 cups, the price is $1.10 per cup plus $15 shipping and handling.
Create a function to describe the price of cups.
Piecewise Function –Example 4
You have a summer job that pays time and a half for over time. That is, if you work more than 40 hours per week your
hourly wages for the extra hour is 1.5 times your normal hourly wages of $7.
a. Write and graph a piecewise function that gives your weekly pay p in terms of the number h of hour you work.
b. How much will you get paid if you work for 45 hours?
Practice Questions
1. The cost of hiring a catering service to serve food for a 3. A house painter charges $12 per hour for the first 40
party is $150 per head for 20 persons or less, $130 per hours he works, $18 for the ten hours after that, and $24 for
head for 21 to 50 persons. For 100 or more persons, the all hours after that.
cost is at $100 per head.
• Represent the total cost as a piecewise function of the • How much does he earn for a 70 hour week?
number of attendees of the party.
