power. However, it is not recommended due to the power drain on the batteries.
BAT - These tests must be performed with the component powered by the airplane's batteries or the batteries
built into the individual component in the case of the standby gyro, ELT or other components with internal battery
power.
LAB - Used when special equipment which requires that the component be removed from the airplane and
taken to a place equipped to perform the check or calibration.
FLT - Test is to be performed during a flight.
(2) Primary purpose of the Inspection Time Limits section is to provide a complete listing of all inspection items in an
order that allows easy access for the information listed previously. This section is not intended to be utilized as a
guideline for inspection of the airplane.
D. Section 5-11-00, Component Time Limits. This section provides a list of overhaul or replacement intervals for components
in chapter order. These requirements are not listed in Inspection Time Limits. The component overhaul or replacement
criteria must be utilized as a guideline for determining proper action regarding the components listed. These requirements
must be worked into the continuous inspection program to provide a complete inspection program.
E. Section 5-12-00, Continuous Inspection Program. This section outlines the continuous inspection program which is
Cessna Aircraft Company's recommended inspection program. The program is divided into five primary phases which
cover all inspection requirements up through the 1200-hour interval inspection items. The remaining phases cover
inspections which are at intervals other than what the five primary phases cover. Refer to Continuous Inspection Program
for a more detailed description of the Continuous Inspection Program.
F. Section 5-50-00, Unscheduled Maintenance Checks. This section includes inspections and checks which may be required
due to special or unusual circumstances and do not have regular repetitive intervals for accomplishment.
INSPECTIONS
1. General
A. General inspection criteria
(1) During accomplishment of each of the specific inspections listed in this chapter, additional general inspections of
surrounding areas should be performed while access is available. These general inspections are intended to detect
obvious conditions which may warrant further action.
(2) When an area is exposed, wire bundles should be inspected for chafing, proper security and support. Verify that wire
bundles are not secured to hydraulic tubes or lines.
(3) Inspection items listed are for specific components and systems, however, entire inspection program requires and
expects a high degree of professionalism and judgment on part of inspection personnel to ensure that all components
and systems are maintained and inspected to verify highest safety standards.
(4) If a component or system is disturbed (due to maintenance being performed) after completion of an initially required
operational or functional test, then that specific test must be re-confirmed after completion of any maintenance prior to
returning system or component to service. Refer to appropriate chapter in this Maintenance Manual for removal,
installation, operational tests and functional tests of components and/or systems.
(5) For items or components requiring lubrication as applicable, refer to Chapter 12, Scheduled Servicing - Description
and Operation, for lubricant, lubricating points and method.
(6) Refer to Chapter 6, Airplane Zoning - Description and Operation, for airplane zone definition.
(7) Conduct a preflight inspection upon completion of the applicable inspection to ensure all required items are properly
serviced. Refer to Approved Airplane Flight Manual.
2. Interval and Phase Cross-Reference for Inspection Time Limits
NOTE: Inspection requirements for the engines and vapor cycle cooling system are supplied by the
component manufacturer. To make sure that the latest inspection requirements given by the
manufacturer are complied with, refer to and complete the requirements at the intervals published in
those inspection documents. For a list of the supplier publications that are available, refer to the
Introduction, Supplier Publication List.

B. The example above illustrates a sample task number. Beginning with word Task, numbers that follow indicate chapter,
section and subject where inspection task text can be found. The two digit function number indicates general classification
of task and may be found in Table 1. The last digit, just after function number, indicates sequence number. If same chapter-
section-subject and function is used for a different task, sequence number increments by one.
C. CD-ROM users may link from a highlighted task number, to task text. Task numbers may be found in Inspection Time
Limits table or at any point throughout this manual where a task number is referenced.
D. Functions which may be used in this manual are listed in Table 1.
NOTE: The third digit of function is assigned sequentially beginning with zero to ensure a unique nine
digit task number.

specifications, type data sheets or other documents approved by the Administrator are complied with and the
airplane, or turbine-powered rotorcraft including the airframe, engines, propellers, rotors, appliances, survival
equipment and emergency equipment, is inspected in accordance with an inspection program selected under the
provisions of paragraph (f) of this section, except that, the owner or operator of a turbine-powered rotorcraft may elect
to use the provisions of paragraph 91.409(a), (b), (c) or (d) in lieu of an inspection option of paragraph (f).
(2) The registered owner or operator of each airplane or turbine powered rotorcraft described in paragraph (e) of this
section must select, identify in the aircraft maintenance records and use one of the following programs for the
inspection of the aircraft:
(a) A continuous airworthiness inspection program that is a part of a continuous airworthiness maintenance
program currently in use by a person holding an air carrier operating certificate issued under Part 121 or 135 of
this chapter and operating that make and model aircraft under Part 121 of this chapter and maintaining it under
paragraph 135.411(a) (2) of this chapter.

administrator may require revision to this inspection program in accordance with the provisions of Part 91.415.
(3) Each operator shall include in the selected program the name and address of the person responsible for scheduling
the inspections required by the program and make a copy of that program available to the person performing
inspections on the aircraft and, upon request, to the Administrator.
(4) Each operator of an airplane or turbine-powered rotorcraft desiring to establish or change an approved inspection
program under paragraph (f) (4) of this section must submit the program for approval to the local FAA Flight
Standards district office having jurisdiction over the area in which the aircraft is based. The program must include the
following information:
(a) Instructions and procedures for the conduct of inspections for the particular make and model airplane, including
necessary tests and checks. The instructions and procedures must set forth in detail the parts and areas of the
airframe, engines, propellers, rotors and appliances, including emergency equipment required to be inspected.
(b) A schedule for performing of the inspections that must be performed under the program expressed in terms of
the time in service, calendar time, number of system operations, or any combination of these.
(c) When an operator changes from one inspection program, under paragraph (f) of this section, to another, the
time in service, calendar times, or cycles of operation accumulated under the previous program must be applied
in determining inspection due times under the new program.
3. Construction
A. Following is the recommended continuous inspection and maintenance schedule for Model 550 airplanes.
B. The program is divided into five primary phases (Phases 1 through 5) which are the main repetitive phases that make up
the basic requirements of the inspection program. The remaining phases include all of the remaining inspection items. The
phases and inspection interval of each are listed below:
NOTE: In addition to the phases listed below, Phase B is also provided and is required to be
accomplished at 150-hour intervals when Phases 1 thru 4 are combined at 300-hour intervals
METHOD 1: Phase 1 through Phase 4 inspections are based on 300-hour cycles, with one of the phase inspections
accomplished every 75 hours of airplane operation. Applicable additional phases are integrated at their due times with the
first four phases. At the completion of Phase 4, Phase 1 will become due 75 hours later and the cycle is to be repeated.

METHOD 2: Phase 1 and Phase 2 are combined and accomplished at alternate 150- hour intervals, with Phase 3 and
Phase 4 being performed at the next 150-hour interval. Applicable additional phases are integrated at their due times with
the first four phases. At the completion of Phase 3 and Phase 4, Phase 1 and Phase 2 will become due 150 hours later
and the cycle is to be repeated.

METHOD 3: Phase 1 through Phase 4 are all combined and accomplished at 300-hour intervals. Applicable additional
phases are integrated at their due times with the first four phases. Those that cannot be so integrated, must be performed
early or separately.

NOTE: With all of the phases combined into 300-hour intervals, an inspection is required to be
accomplished on certain items every 150 hours. These inspections are listed in Phase B. The 150-
hour inspections are listed in two of the phases. Duplicated items need only be accomplished one
time when combining phases.
H. Four optional plans of accomplishing Phase 5 are provided as follows:
(1) PLAN A: Phase 5 can be accomplished all at once, each 1200 hours concurrently with accomplishment at the end of
the third cycle of Phases 1 through 4.
(2) PLAN B: Phase 5 can be accomplished partially (approximately 1/12th) with each accomplishment of Phases 1
through 4 when they are performed each 75 hours (Method 1 of Phases 1 through 4).
(3) PLAN C: Phase 5 can be accomplished partially (approximately 1/8th) with each accomplishment of combined
Phases 1 through 4 when they are performed each 150 hours (Method 2 of Phases 1 through 4).
(4) PLAN D: Phase 5 can be accomplished partially (approximately 1/4th) with each accomplishment of combined
Phases 1 through 4 when they are performed each 300 hours (Method 3 of Phases 1 through 4).
(5) Plan A may be used for all airplanes regardless of hourly usage.
(6) Plans B, C and D are only recommended for airplanes whose annual flight time exceeds 400 hours per year.

7. Program Startup
NOTE: This procedure for program startup applies only to airplanes that have been previously using an
inspection program other than Cessna's recommended Continuous Inspection Program.
A. To start this continuous inspection program, the following steps must be accomplished for airplanes other than those newly
manufactured.
(1) Conduct a complete airplane inspection by performing Phases 1 through 5.
(2) Start the program at check number 1. (Refer to Continuous Inspection Program Procedure)
(3) Continue performing inspections in the normal manner.
8. Logbook Forms, Pilot Information
A. Airplane Flight Log, Section 1.
(1) Provides a convenient place to maintain individual and cumulative flight records, total hours on the airplane and each
engine, total landings for the airplane and the cycles of each engine.
(2) The original of the Flight Log form is placed in Section 1 of the Approved Airplane Flight and Maintenance Log Book
and kept as part of the permanent airplane log.
B. Form Completion.
(1) The basic information at the top of this form should be completed. Enter the number of the page as it sequentially falls
in the logbook section beginning with 1. The line entitled "Accumulated Totals Brought Forward" is the record
information which is being carried forward from the previous page. This is a journey log and one line represents one
flight. Under the following columns should be recorded:
1. The date of each flight.
2a. City where flight originated.
2b. City of flight destination.
3. The number of persons aboard, including crew.
4. Distance of flight in nautical miles.
5. The flight duration in hours and tenths from flight hour meter.
6. Accumulated total airplane time in hours and tenths.
7. Accumulated total time for engine 1 in hours and tenths.
8. Accumulated total time for engine 2 in hours and tenths.
9. Number of landings this flight.
10. Accumulated total airplane landings.
11. Accumulated engine 1 cycles.
12. Accumulated engine 2 cycles.
13. The discrepancy sheet number column provides a reference to the airplane discrepancy form which details the
airplane discrepancies on particular flight. If there are no discrepancies, "NONE" should be entered in this column.
This provides the pilot with a convenient method of determining whether previous airplane discrepancies have been
corrected.
14. The last name of the pilot and copilot for each flight should be recorded in the last column.
15. The line "Accumulated Totals" should be filled in:
(a) When the form is completely filled.
(b) At the end of the CESCOM reporting period.
(2) The totals of these lines should be carried forward to the line entitled "Accumulated Totals Brought Forward" on the
next airplane flight log form used.
(3) The original (white sheet) should be placed in the Airplane Flight and Maintenance Logbook in Section 1.
(4) The first copy (pink sheet) should be mailed to the address at the top of the form and is used by CESCOM to report
airplane utilization.
(5) The second copy (yellow sheet) provides an extra customer copy and should be filed at the airplane base.

ITEM CODE TASK ZONE MECH INSP REMARKS
NUMBER
disc and blades, the engine inlet and tailpipe should be provided with suitable covers. When there is wind to rotate
the engines, the covers should be installed as soon as practical following engine shutdown.
(3) The aerodynamic cleanliness level (degree of surface smoothness), especially in the engine inlet cowling area,
contributes greatly to performance capabilities of the airplane. It is most important that the high cleanliness level be
maintained.
(4) Contour and waviness distortion of the aerodynamic surface may be developed in the course of normal operation or
by improper handling during maintenance operations. Highly curved surfaces, such as the engine inlet lip and inlet
ducting, are regions where airplane performance may be considerably affected by such distortions. Doors and
access panels are susceptible to waviness through rough handling. Care should be exercised in the handling of these
items.
F. Towing with a Large Fuel Unbalance or High Drag/Side Loads due to Ground Handling.
(1) A fuel unbalance condition exists when one wing has a greater quantity of fuel than the other. This can be due to fuel
system malfunction, improper fueling practices, etc. It is best not to move an airplane in this condition; but if it is
unavoidable, do so with care and an inspection is required prior to returning airplane to service.
(2) High drag/side load condition shall be defined to exist whenever the airplane skids or overruns from the prepared
surface into an unprepared surface, or lands short of prepared surface, or makes a landing which involves the
blowing of tires or skids on a runway to the extent that the safety of the airplane is in question. This covers takeoffs
and landings or unusual taxi conditions.
