Activity 1

The document outlines an educational activity focused on understanding and applying set operations, including union, intersection, subsets, and complement, using Venn diagrams. It consists of three parts: defining sets and performing operations, constructing Venn diagrams for visual representation, and applying set concepts to a real-world scenario involving student preferences for tea and coffee. Students will learn to calculate specific values based on the given data and represent their findings graphically.

Activity: Understanding and Applying Set Operations

Objective:
Students will learn about sets, set operations (union, intersection, subsets, complement), and how to
represent these concepts using Venn diagrams. They will also apply their understanding of sets in real-
world contexts.

Part 1: Basic Concepts

Questions:

Define the following sets:

Assume U={1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9} and the subsets A={2,4,6,8}, B={6,7,8,9} and C={1,2,3}.

Find:

1. A∪B = {2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9}

2. A∩B = {6, 8}

3. Ac = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9}

4. C⊆U = {1, 2, 3}

Part 2: Set Operations Using Venn Diagrams

1. Construct Venn Diagrams:

o Draw a Venn diagram representing the sets AAA, BBB, and CCC on the same diagram.

o Shade the region representing:

1. A∪B =

2. A∩C =

3. Bc

Part 3: Application of Sets Using Venn Diagrams

1. Scenario:

o In a survey of 100 students, 60 like tea, 45 like coffee, and 30 like both tea and coffee.

2. Questions:

1. Represent this information using a Venn diagram.

2. Calculate how many students like only tea.

3. Calculate how many students like only coffee.

4. Calculate how many students like neither tea nor coffee.

Part 2:

A B

C U
Part 3:

100 students

30 likes tea 30 15 likes coffee

25 likes neither
tea nor coffee
