1. Using the method of undetermined coefficients, obtain a real general
solution of following non-homogeneous linear differential equations
(LDEs) :
(i) y 00 − y 0 − 2y = 3 ex
(ii) y 00 − 4y 0 = 8 cos πx
(iii) y 00 + 6y 0 + 9y = 50 e−x cos x
(iv) y 00 + 6y 0 + 9y = e−x cos 2x; y(0) = 1, y 0 (0) = −1
(v) (2D2 − 3D − 2I)y = 13 − 2x2 (Ans : y = c1 e2x + c2 e−0.5x + x2 − 3x)
(vi) (D2 − I)y = sinh x
(vii) y 00 − 4y 0 + 3y = 10 cos x; y(0) = 1, y 0 (0) = −1
(viii) y 00 − 9y 0 = x3 + e2x − sin 3x
(ix) y 000 + y 0 = 3x2 + 4 sin x − 2 cos x
(x) y 00 − 2y 0 = 12e2x − 8e−2x
2. Solve the following non-homogeneous LDEs using method of variation
of parameters :
(i) y 00 + 4y = cos 2x
(ii) (D3 + 4D)y = sin x
(iii) (D2 + 2D + 2I)y = 4e−x sec3 x
(Ans : y = e−x (c1 cosx + c2 sinx) + 2e−x sin2 x secx)
00 0 e2x
(iv) y − 4y + 4y =
x
1
2 16 e−3x
(v) (D + 6D + 9I)y = 2
x +1
(Ans : y = (c1 + c2 x)e−3x + (−ln(x2 + 1) + 2x arc tanx)8e−3x )
(vi) y 00 + 9y = sec 3x
3
(vii) x2 y 00 − xy 0 + y = x ln x, x > 0 (Ans : y = (c1 + c2 lnx)x + x(lnx)
6 )
2
(viii) (D + I)y = cot x
(ix) (D3 + D)y = cosecx
(x) (x2 D2 − 2xD + 2I)y = x3 cos x (Ans : y = c1 x + c2 x2 − x cosx)
(xi) y 00 − 4y 0 + 5y = e2x cosecx
(xii) y 00 − y 0 = (3 + x) x2 ex
3. For the following non-homogeneous differential equation, a solution
y1 (x) of the corresponding homogeneous equation is given. Find a
second linearly independent solution y2 (x) of the corresponding
homogeneous equation and also find the general solution of the non-homogeneous
equation using the method of variation of parameters.
(1 + x2 )y 00 − 2xy 0 + 2y = x3 + x, y1 (x) = x
(Ans : y2 (x) = x2 − 1 and G.S. is
y(t) = c1 x + c2 (x2 − 1) − x2 (x2 − 2 ln(x2 + 1)) + (x2 − 1)(x − tan−1 x))
