We have completed the explanation of the topic in the previous


worksheet. So let us recollect some important points :

POINTS TO REMEMBER :
 There are different kinds of plants all around us.
 Plants such as trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers and creepers grow on
land.
 Lotus, waterlily and hyacinth are plants that grow in water,
 A plant has roots, stem, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds, that
perform different functions.
 The part of the plant that grows under the ground – like roots forms
the root system.
 The parts that grow above the ground-like stem, leaves. flowers and
fruits form the shoot system.
 Plants are useful to us in many ways. We get different food products
from plants. They also give us clothes, medicines, wood, tea, coffee,
sugar etc.
 Sometimes, plants modify their roots, stems. fruits, flowers and
leaves to store food.
 Plants are a very valuable part of the environment, They provide us
with oxygen for breathing.
 We should take care of them and plant more trees to keep our
surroundings fresh and green.

I) QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

1.What are trees? Give two examples.


Ans. Very big and tall plants are called trees. They have a thick,
brown and woody stem called a trunk. Trees live for many years and
have many hard branches. Example- neem, peepal .
2 What are the basic differences between a herb and a shrub ?
Ans. The basic differences between a herb and a shrub are :

1. Herbs are very small plants. 1. Shrubs are smaller than

3. Where do plants grow?


Ans. Plants grow everywhere. They grow on land, on mountain tops,
in the oceans, lakes, rivers and in the deserts.
4.How is a climber different from a creeper?
Ans. Climbers are small plants with weak stems. They need support
to climb and grow vertically. e.g – money plant , grapevine etc.
Creepers are also small plants with very weak stems. They
cannot climb with support but creep along the ground. e.g –
pumpkin, bitter gourd etc.
5. What do you understand by shoot system?
Ans. The parts of the plant that grow above the ground – like stem,
leaves, flowers and fruits form the shoot system.
6. Which part of the plant is called the kitchen of the plant and why?
Ans. Leaves of the plant are called the kitchen of the plant because
they prepare food for the plant in presence of sunlight, air, water and
green pigment called chlorophyll.

7. What are the functions of the roots of a plant?


Ans. Roots grow under the ground and fix the plant to the ground.
They take in water and minerals for the plant from the soil.
8. How does the stem help the plant?
Ans. Stem gives support to the plant and carries water and food to all
parts of the plant.
9. Write any three uses of plants.
Ans 1.Plants provide us with oxygen for breathing.
2.They give us different food products like fruits, vegetables,
foodgrains,e.t.c and many other useful things.
3. Various medicines like quinine, penicillin etc are made from
plants.
10. How do we protect the plant ?
Ans. We can protect our green friends by the following ways:
a) Water them regularly.
b) Do not pluck their flowers and leaves.
c) Stop people from cutting them down.
d) Loving them as our friend.
