Acids and alkalis play essential roles in our daily lives, often without us realizing it. Take
citrus fruits like oranges and lemons; their tangy taste is due to citric acid, a natural acid.
When you mix lemon juice with baking soda, which is an alkali, you observe fizzing - a
chemical reaction producing carbon dioxide gas. Vinegar, another acid found in many
households, is often used in cooking and pickling. On the contrary, soap is an example of
an alkali, and it helps in cleaning by reacting with grease and oils. In our kitchen, we
encounter both acids and alkalis regularly. Consider tomatoes (acidic) and baking powder
(alkali) in the preparation of pancakes. The batter undergoes a chemical reaction, creating
a light and fluffy texture.
