The Impacts of Modular Learning on Grade 10 students Academic Success at San
Jose City National High School

In these past few years until now, students use different modes of learning
because of the pandemic. It can be modular, asynchronous, online classes, and etc. so
the students can still continue to learn without having the real face to face setting of
classes. These modes of learning are still in use since 2022 up to the present. In this
present situation, due to the very hot weather, modular learning is the applicable mode
of learning.
Modular learning is a way for students to learn even without the face to face
teaching discussion. It is an individualized instruction that allows students to use a self-
learning module either in print or digital format depending on the resources of the
students.
Modular distance learning refers to the learning method commonly used by
teachers in basic education, particularly in rural areas. It is the use of modules made by
teachers with different tasks and learning activities based from the essential learning
competencies (Anzaldo, 2022).
Some of the advantages of modular learning are flexibility in the time and area of
study, self-paced learning, personalized learning, less pressure, and easier access to
learning materials. Modular learning can also help students with the fear of interacting
with other people. Students can also decide if they will answer the given tasks right
away.
Students who has fear of interacting with other people can also focus and rest
more so they can answer their tasks and focus more on their tasks. Modular Learning
helps a lot of students who has fear of interacting with people, such as they can move
well, they can focus well without fear, they can talk well, and they can spend their time
on their tasks.
Moreover, the modular is fast and easy to integrate because they are pre-built
and usually requires no calibration. Also, it does not require any specific equipment,
thus suitable for any business type. The development cost is lower. Coming to the
disadvantages, they have a limited number of configurations (Pereira, 2022).
Many students say that they do not learn from the modules. Some students just
get the answer from social media platforms which is why the students do not learn
anything in this way of learning. Students are not of the same capacity that is why
others are not able to do self-learning and other students struggle with their time
because of other responsibilities. Modules are for formality cause and not internalized
by the students. Many students said they actually never learn from the modules. Some
students tend to copy their answers from others without reading the module. Not all
students do their modules (Calubaquib, 2021).
According to Boholano et al. (n.d.), one of the concerns regarding modular
distance learning is the student’s comprehension about the content of the modules.
They find it difficult to understand the module and have to analyze it on their own. The
scores or the grades, in general, cannot guarantee the understanding and the learning
of the students. Probably, another person will answer the modules. They can easily
search for the answers on the internet without thinking about themselves. They can
copy the answers immediately. They can, as well, ask answers from other classmates
without the supervision of the teacher.
Parents were the ones who answered the modules, so there is no learning on the
part of the child. It is better if the students can comprehend and understand the content
of the module, but, most of them have difficulty answering the written activities and
tasks. Also, based on the feedback notes, the students preferred the face-to-face
classes. Mastery of the lesson is less evident, and skills are not hard to test.
In modular distance learning, the problem is students’ comprehension in which they
cannot be able to really grasp the concepts to be learned due to their poor reading
comprehension. Some of the parents answer the modules by themselves, not their
child/children. Teachers cannot assure whether the students learned from the self-
learning modules. Pupils have difficulty in grasping the lesson. Also, there is a tendency
that the pupil is not the one answering the activities instead they ask somebody to
answer it for them.
The above-mentioned directs the researchers in studying the Impacts of Modular
Learning on Grade 10 students Academic Success at San Jose City National High
School.

Objectives of the Study

The focus of the study is to know the impacts of Modular Learning on Grade 10
students Academic Success at San Jose City National High School. Specifically the
study aims to:

1. Identify the impacts of Modular Learning on Grade 10 students Academic

Success at San Jose City National High School.
2. Describe the challenges of Modular Learning on Grade 10 students; and
3. Determine the advantages of Modular Learning on Grade 10 students Academic
Success at San Jose City National High School.

Significance of the Study

This study will give great to the following:

THE TEACHERS
Teachers can benefit from understanding the strengths and weaknesses
of modular learning. The study can highlight effective strategies within modular
learning and suggest areas for improvement. It can also inform professional
development programs and instructional design.

THE STUDENTS
By focusing on the academic success of Grade 10 students, the study can
identify specific factors that contribute to or hinder their performance in a modular
learning setup. This information is crucial for developing targeted interventions to
help students succeed.
THE PARENTS AND COMMUNITY
The results can inform parents and the community about the efficacy of
modular learning. This can foster greater involvement and support from these
stakeholders, ensuring a more holistic approach to student education.

THE FUTURE RESEARCHERS

The study can serve as a foundation for future research on modular
learning and its impacts. It can highlight areas that need further investigation and
provide a comparative basis for similar studies in different contexts or
educational levels.
